Shortness of breath

For the past year + I have been very short of breath and find myself battling to fill my lungs with air. I sometimes have to breathe deeply 3-4 times before I feel I have enough oxygen in my lungs. I was a smoker but gave up 7 years ago.  There is no accompanying cough or other symptoms.  In 03/04 I had chemo due to a brain tumour and used to have regular lung function tests to check that my lungs weren't being scarred from the chemo.  I have seen two GP's but haven't found any answer...are you able to help? (I've heard that there is a very rare condition that occurs in young women that causes shortage of breathe, lung collapse and eventual death.)

To get extra oxygen into the lungs, do this pranayam twice a day and you will notice the benefit in weeks.Expelling of old air is important. Let me know how you feel after 9 days and 28 days of pranayam practice.Continue the pranayam once a day, after you are better, to maintain healthy lung function.
Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after one minute.
Kapalbhati pranayam -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in(through the nose) will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and do for 20 to 30 minutes twice a day. Children under 15 years – do 5 to 10 minutes twice a day.
Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill people do it gently.
Anulom Vilom pranayam –
Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 15 to 30  minutes twice a day.
Children under 15 years – do 5 to 10 minutes twice a day.
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

See a doctor who specializes in lung disorders. Is it possible that scarring occurred after you were last tested for it? Also, could you have developed asthma?
