I was once misdiagnosd as having copd. I hope your Dr did a complete pulomary function test and sniff test as well as a chest x-ray.It turned out that I had a paralized diaphragm. This gveme many of the symptoms you described. Its a small chance but if this was the case the problem could be corrected by surgery. It changedmy life for the better. Good luck! I hope your DR, was wrong.

Hi,  sorry about the bronchiecstasis.

I have mild bronchiecstasis but severe asthma.  We thought the bronchiecstasis my have been triggering my asthma so I saw a good pulmonologist.  There are treatments available depending on the severity of your lung damage.

You may want to request/demand a bronchoscopy.  That will tell the doctors exactly what kind of organism is causing your infection so that they can treat it specifically.  It is VERY helpful.  You may have "super but" bacteria that will require high doseage, extended course of antibiotics (usually clarithromyacin), a fungal infection, or another organism.  Treating the organism you have is essential to controlling your disease.

There are also inhaled antibiotics that can be used as determined by your doctor.

Bronchiecstasis can also be treated similarly to CF with a flutter wheel or compression therapy (thumping the back to break up and help expell the congestion) or a shake vest.

I hope that gives you some idea of treatment options.  Personally, I would say don't give up.  Find a doctor who is smart enough and determined enough to get your life back for you.  They exist.  You just have to find one in your area.  Check the specialty organization web sites for one near you.  Look for one that has a fellowship with that organization.  "Fellows" tend to be more dedicated and go the extra mile with their patients.

I was right where you are about 7 months ago.  My doctor had been discussing a specific treatment which we finally got done and my life changed completely.  I was getting sick and on antibiotics and steroids every 4 weeks.  Since treatment I have been mildly sick three times.  I still get the antibiotics ocassionally, but no steroids.  I did get a job, and I have only missed about 1/2 hour for being sick since starting.

Hang in there.  You do have options.

God bless.

Chronic bronchitis is classified as a chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD). It can be managed with inhalers to keep the inflammation at bay. There are also oral meds that are quite effective as well. Irritants can cause the airway to spasm and exacerbate symptoms. Dust, pet dander, cold air, perfumes, exercise and smoke are common irritants. Well wishes to you!
