Do I have an STD?

Hi, im 18 years old. I wouldn't say im extremely sexually active I haven't had intercourse in over 2 years. While i haven't had intercourse in 2 years I have participated in oral sex. A week ago today I went and hung out with this guy who pretty much forced me to perform oral and forced himself on me as well. Come to find out he had a girlfriend so with that being said I think it could be likely that he's done the same with tons of girls and maybe he has contracted an STD from someone else. About 3 days after I thought he had maybe cut me on accident because thats what it had felt like and it would be a stinging pain every now and again mostly when i went to sit down or squat etc. Well now it has escalated and this morning i noticed 2 large bumps on the right lip of my vagina. It burns and stings really bad when i pee and the pain is so excoriating that it can bring water to my eyes. Oddly enough 2 days ago i woke up with a sore throat and had a headache. My right lymph node is swollen. I went to the doctor yesterday to see if maybe I had strep throat and my results came back negative. So they tested me for a relapse of mono(because i had really bad mono in January) and if its not that my doctor just thought it could be a tonsillitis virus. (ill get my results back tomorrow to see if i am having a relapse) I never mentioned anything to her about thinking it could be herpes or even worse HIV because it never crossed my mmd until i noticed the 2 large bums today. Again the pain is excruciating to just pee and a stinging and tingling when i sit or walk. My sore throat hasn't gotten any better and I've lost 5 pounds already.

What is this? Is it herpes or HIV?

Im so scared i feel like I've ruined my life before it even got started.

I'm sorry to say this, but I am suspicious you have caught genital herpes. See a doctor or clinic right away, for sure in the next day or two -- maybe even this afternoon, especially if you're in the west. There is effective treatment for herpes to speed improvement, but the longer you wait the less effective it is. In additon, the diagnosis is more accurate the sooner the exam and testing are done.

When you are examined, be sure they test your genital area sore(s) for the herpes virus, preferably using the PCR test. A culture test is OK if that's all they have available, but definitely do not do only a blood test. (A herpes blood test might be a good idea, as a baseline for comparison with a later blood specimen. But not as the only test to diagnose possible new herpes.)

But don't worry about HIV. The chance a partner like yours has herpes is high, but there is almost no chance he has HIV. And your symptoms are not at all like a new HIV infection.

Having said all that, don't panic! As fearsome as herpes may seem, in fact most cases end up being no big deal in the long run. Keep a cool head, but do get professionally examined as soon as you can.

Please return and let us know the outcome after you have been examined. Best wishes and good luck to you!

If confused by my testing advice, consider printing out my reply and taking it with you when you see a doctor or clinic.

And by the way, I believe the exposure you describe qualifies as sexual assualt. I'm not a legal expert of course, but I recommend you also discuss this aspect with the doctor or clinic you see.

Thank you so much for your response. I've been driving myself crazy by searching the internet for anything and everything it could be but as much as I was hoping to get a curable answer I think you're right after all. I'm making an appt with my gyn tomorrow morning. Hopefully they can squeeze me in soon! Also is it possible that it could just be a abscess?

And also my mother thought it was sexual assault too. She asked if I wanted to press charges but I really just don't want to even think about this situation ever again after I figure out what I have so I'm choosing not to press charges or even talk to him about any of this.

Also if it is herpes would it be type 1 or type 2?

I'm sorry I just have so many questions

I'm glad you're seeking care. If you tell the office when you call that you think you have initial herpes and you're in serious pain, they should find a way to see you the same day.

The likely virus type depends on more sexual exposure details. Does "forced himself on me as well" mean oral, genital or both?

It means orally but he kept trying to rub his genitils on mine...so it could probably count for both, but he never actually succeeded with having inter course with me.

I'll predict HSV1. If so (and if you have herpes), it will be relatively good news. Genital HSV1 is much less a problem going forward -- few recurrent outbreaks (maybe none) and little chance of infecting future partners. This is why it is so important to have tests to learn the virus type. Make sure they do a swab test from your genital lesions.
