International Living: concern about STDs

Hello,
I am currently living in West Africa with my husband. I am 19 hours to the closest gynecologist and am concerned about a recent vagina problem. I realize this is not a forum that can diagnose me however, advice and insights about what maybe my problem and how I can treat it would be much appreciated.

I am arrived here two months ago and realize my body is still adapting to the climate. I was on Malarone to protect me from malaria and recently switched (about a week ago) to a French brand called Savarine. I suffer from allergies that are caused by pollen and usually take allegra but allergy medicine is not available here. At the same time i started the anti-malarianl drugs and moved to West Africa I started on oral contraceptives: Necon 1/35.

My husband and I decided it was ok, since I was on the pill for him to finish in me. So, for the past two months he now finishes whereas before he would withdrawl. Within one weeks of being in-country, I had a fever, chills, and a sore throat. The doctor here assumed it was malaria but I had a test done it was negative however, i was warned that the test administered only picks up the most common strand of malaria. I had malaria before and I don't think it was that not to mention I was only in country for 7 days and it takes a bit for the parasite to incubate.

The doctor perscribed me anti-malaria drugs and two different types of anti-biotics for my sore throat. Which later led to a yeast infection. I was given a 12-day monsitat like medicine but decided to take a diflucan pills I had handy. But, the yeast infection persisted. And so I took the monistat and it went away. Around the time I switched to the new malaria medicine (a week ago) I developed the similar symptoms as before during my first week but no chills or fever but a sore throat and green mucus. MY husband and I were having sex the other night and he said that it burned his penis during intercourse. It did not bother me. When he withdrew we notice that he had two small cuts on his penis that were bleeding slightly. I also believe I was not lubricated enough...

I realize this is a lot of detail. But, can yeast infections cause 1. burning on the male during intercourse 2. can non-lubricated sex cause cuts? 3. could my symptoms and his cuts a sign of herpes? 4. Could it have to deal with my PH level in my vagina as I started on birth control?

Like I said, I am far from a doctor. But, can make a trip if necessary. My husband has been tested for HIV. I have had tests for almost all STDs and HIV just prior to coming to West Africa. I am afraid my husband has had something dormant as he did not realize that he should have been tested for other STDs other than HIV.

I realize this is a big one. But, any reactions or insights?
Thank you.

they could be due to anything. really doesn't sound like you have any reason to suspect std's as a cause.

could be lack of lube, irritation or even from changes in soap and such.

Thank you Grace! I appreciate it! I guess what was the most concerning was the two cuts on my husband's penis after sex.

Thank you.

this does not sound like a std issue.

any local doctor should be able to test you for yeast infections. recently starting on the pill might be triggering vaginitis for you.
