PID

Dear doc, my wife was diagnosed with PID about 12 months after we got married, by laparoscopy (carried out due to heavy and painful periods). Swabs from lap didn't grow anything. I had been to the STD clinic before we had sex, due to history of unprotected sex with 1 partner (tests negative) and wife had no previous partners. I attended clinic again (again urine and swabs negative) and we both had treatment (me- doxycycline, wife- cipro and metronidazole) and things settled down. Wife's periods again became heavy and painful, and she reattended doctor who took hv swabs (negative for chlamydia). Wife's symptoms still very similar to when she was diagnosed with PID (despite previous negative tests). Is it possible to be reinfected if I was suboptimally treated, and are online testing kits (urine for chlamydia and gonorrhoea) accurate?  Many thanks

Yes, I was diagnosed with PID many years ago, because everything was red and inflamed during a lap.  I took all the meds, etc., then some time later, it came back.  I had another lap, and they found a cyst on my ovary, and said it was from that.

Then it came back (and I had pain in between, just not as bad), and I had another lap, and they finally found endometriosis.  My doctor then said maybe I never had PID, and instead it was all inflamed from a cyst or endo.

I wish her the best of luck - its not always easy getting this diagnosed, if this is what she has, and it can even be missed during a lap if they aren't looking for it.

I'd recommend checking the endometriosis association's website.

Yes, ultrasound has shown she also has PCOS, but her consultant seemed pretty convinced about PID based on appearance of tubes at laparoscopy. Can endometriosis give similar appearance? Thanks again for advice

I'd wonder if this is PID if everything is coming back negative.  I'd think ovarian cysts, endometriosis, etc., are more likely.  Has she had an ultrasound or anything?
