Std tests really conclusive???

Are the 12 weeks or 3 months testing recommended periods really accurate or is it just an assumption and there really isnt a conclusive testing period? Is it 12, 24 or 26 or 6 months? Even if all tests are negative beyond the 12weeks do people have to retest at 24 then at 26 and final at 6 months?  Ots just my question regarding testing. Thanks all
