Blood results after encounter

Dear Dr.,

15 months ago, I had an encounter with an African prostitute I met in a bar in Belgium. I performed oral sex on her, but did not know she was on her period. This girl was 24, and came to Belgium at age 17(she told me this as I went back because of my symptoms). She told me she was not tested for years(!). Two days later, I started to have glossitis on my tongue(white lesions) and my stomage hurt for some weeks. Three weeks later, I started to have nights sweats, and I felt fatigue over months(10 months). The fatigue was gone after taking aciclovir(a doc prescribed me this as he thought I might have genital herpes infection on my tongue, which I tested neg for). I also developed a sore throat until now. After six months, I developed arthritis-like pain in my legs and eye pain.

After that encounter, my housedoc had drawn blood from me, to test. After one week, my leucocytes were slightly elevated: 11830, ref 3800 - 10000) and my lymphocytes were low: 14(ref 21-41%). After 3 weeks, my leucocytes were normal, but my liver enzymes started to raise:

after one week:
AST: 24(ref. 1-38)
ALT: 26 (ref. 1-41)

after 3 weeks:
AST: 27
ALT: 30

after 3 months:
AST: 32
ALT: 33

The next time I had my blood drawn was at 7 months, and again my lymphocytes where low. After 15 months now, it happened 4 times when I had my blood checked that these lymphocytes were too low.
After a year, I was diagnosed with some systemic disease. Although I had no sex with my wife until now, she developed lupus(I must have infected her via saliva). We both lost appr. 10% weigth over months, which we both gained back.

All the time, my tests on STD's were negative, except for CMV. I was never, and I'm not infected with hepatitis ABC, HTLV1 and 2. I had also had a test on Herpes 8: neg. Mycoplasma's were tested too, and came also back neg.

My question(s) now is(are):

- what agent can cause a raise of the liver enzymes over months(at least 3 months). A hepatitis strain I was not tested for ?
- Can I be infected with a retro-virus, and develop after years, AIDS ? There are cases of people who get AIDS, being HIV-.

- Can EBV contracted via oral sex, because that's also an option. My doc tested me in 2003 and I tested neg. Now I'm positive, so he thinks I contracted EBV.

Any help would be appreciated, the drs here don't give me any explanation what has happened in the past and do not comment on these liver enzyme values. Instead, they diagnosed me with Reiter's Syndrome(after a year), but Chlamydia infection was not detected, so they put me on Immune Suppressive meds, which is not helping me, really. Also, my ANA, ANCA and cytoplasma test came back negative.
I'm desperate, because I still don't know what has happened to me, and made both of us(my wife and I) so sick. We have a child wish, and I don't know what to do.

This post was wrongly posted, my intention was to ask an expert. I respect what you are saying, but I don't agree.

About my liver enzymes, normally they are within the range of 15-17, so this means an increase of almost 100%, during several months. After some months, they have dropped down, not to the values as before.

I don't see what you are pointing out - a 100% increase?  I don't see that anywhere.

In any case, this is not because of an std, and your results have born that out.  You should be posting in the gastroenterology forum, not the STD forum.

Thank you for your reply. I'd posted this one to the 'experts forum' I thought. I made a mistake, obviously.

Anyways, I have pretty constant liver enzymes, i.e. in the range between 10 and 20, for both of them. I don't think that a raise of 100% is normal, in this particular case. My dr. did not notice this over past year. It took my attention when I had asked for my blood results to see on paper.

I think it is normal when you have an infection, but as my dr 'missed' this element, it is not possible to re-construct what has happened at that particular time(a year ago). After 13 months, he tested me on EBV, that was positive. But WHEN i got infected, nobody knows. The only thing that is fact, is that I tested negative on EBV in 2003.

Take care,

Your liver enzymes did not change. They both fall in the normal range. The differences you see from one test to the next is just normal variance for the test. EB virus causes mono. yes, that is a possibility. Mono may take several months to recover from but is not life threatening. hope you feel better soon. Take care.
