Inconclusive herpes test

My boyfriend got diagnosed with HSV-1. I took a blood test and the results came back inconclusive. What does this mean? What are the chances that I have herpes?
Also, my boyfriend and I have not had sex since his 1st outbreak. What are the chances of getting herpes if we have protected sex?

This discussion is related to herpes test results unclear.

If your test was inconclusive, there is no way to give any odds about what your status is.  You just need to retest.

Did your boyfriend get diagnosed with HSV-1 genitally?  IF he has a genital infection, there is a chance that you could acquire a genital infection, but it is very very low.  Most cases of genital HSV-1 are acquired through oral sex with a person who has a visible cold sore.  If you use condoms, chances are you will never get a genital HSV-1 infection.  Genital HSV-1 outbreaks and aysmptomatic viral shedding generally occur far less frequently than HSV-2.  However, if your boyfriend just had a blood test for HSV-1, he probably has an oral infection, which about half of the US population has.  Hope this helps.
