Probable scabies

SP7
Hi. I posted this on the Dermatology Community also.

I've had really itchy skin for over eight weeks - mostly on my chest, stomach and groin area. Recently, developed red scaly rashes in these areas that itch. Saw dermatologist today and he strongly suspects scabies. Starting treatment (topical and pill) tonight. I live alone and probably contracted this sexually.

Once or twice a month I visit my mom, who's a senior citizen. We exchange a hug when I leave. The skin on our faces touch when we hug. Probably seen her 5 or 6 times since getting scabies. Would this contact (brief hug) put her @ risk for contracting? She has moderate paranoia and mental health issues and everything freaks her out. Thanks.

If she doesn't have it and you don't have crusty type of scabies you won't transmit it.
take care.

Thanks - that's good to hear and reassuring. No, my mom doesn't show any symptoms of scabies (itching, rashes, etc.). I'll keep an eye out for her. Won't tell her about my own condition because she'll start imagining she has it.

Hi and sorry you have this. No you have to have prolonged contact to spread scabies. It is spread by sexual contact, sharing clothing, towels, bedding but if you have crusted scabies like a scab (not scally), then it is easy to spread and possible. so from your description you don't have crusts just scaly areas. A brief hug won't spread it. Does you mother look like she has symptoms. Some people in nursing home get scabies due to unclean bedding and bad nursing homes.
