Trying to pinpoint when I got chlamydia...help

Hi there,

I tested positive for chlamydia a week ago. Doctor told me results a few days ago.

Background: The first time I noticed unusual discharge was after having sex on 9/4/14. I monitored it, and it appeared to be something like BV. I took monistat just in case it was yeast infection, then when my period came on 9/19/14 I waited to see if it would go then. I went to a nurse practitioner who took a look and said it looked like BV -- she sent away for a test for BV and trich and confirmed it was BV. I took MetroGel for a week and things seemed to clear up.

Another note: My period never came in October, which I thought may have been due to new diet changes.

Fast forward a couple weeks and I noticed pelvic pain and symptoms similar to a mild UTI. I started to take macrobid and it did not seem to work that well (usually, my symptoms disappear within a day if it's a UTI on macrobid), so I went back to the nurse practitioner. She said to give it more time. I had an annual with my gyn at the end of that week (week of 10/20/14) so figured I would discuss more with him then if it still persisted.

Turns out I have chlamydia. I am wondering from whom I got it from. As of February 2014, I tested negative for all STDs. I have had 3 partners since that time; one partner I had sex with once in early June and once in late July; another, once in late June and once in early July; and the last one was once in late August and once in early September. As I've read that symptoms, if noticed, normally show up within 1-3 weeks post exposure, I am thinking it would have to be my last partner...correct? I'm very cognizant of symptoms, and the first I ever felt "off" was early September (we had sex 10 days prior to my first notice of abnormal discharge).

Another question: is bacterial vaginosis a symptom of chlamydia?

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Yes indeed. Most likely your symptoms weren't actually due to chlamydia. Even if they were, symptoms from chlamydia can start anytime from a week to years after catching it.

Thanks, Howard. So, it's possible that my chlamydia was dormant for a while before I started feeling any kind of symptoms?

I'm afraid there's simply no way to know with certainty when you were infected. All that can be said is that you were infected since February, and based on your sexual history, presumably from one of your three partners from June through September. Symptoms don't help; it simply isn't possible at this time to know which of your symptoms might have been caused by chlamydia.

You should contact all three of these partners and tell them of your diagnosis and that they should be tested and treated to protect both themselves and any other sex partners they may have.

Bacterial vaginosis sometimes develops in women with other STDs, including chlamydia. But it's an entirely separate problem with different treatment.
