Oral transmission of Trich

Dr,

First I would like to take the time to thank you for the services you provide on this website.  I would like to ask you a few questions. Recently my girlfriend and I have been treated for trichomoniasis.  She received a 10 day course of metronidazole(500mg 2x a day) which she completed.  A few days after I was given a 1 time 2g dose of the same medication.  I know all over the internet says to wait 7 days after the treatment has finished but both of us had a few drinks and she performed unprotected oral sex on me 5 days after I took the 2g dose.  At the time we both believed we were supposed to stay away from penile/vaginal intercourse and not oral sex.  So my questions are as follows

1. In general, Could an infected male pass trich to the female that performed unprotected oral sex on him? So pretty much infect her mouth?
2.  Since it was 5 days post medication, if it's possible via oral sex, do you think that was enough time where she wasn't reinfected?
3. If so, Do we need to go back to the doctors and get retreated?

I know I seem a little anxious I just don't want to go through another round of medication and hoping that is cannot be transferred via oral sex.

Welcome to the forum.

Some questions can be answered accurately from the information in the title, without reading the question itself. That may be the case here.  Trichomonas is not an oral infection and is not known to ever infect hte mouth.  Transmission by oral sex is not known to occur.

Now I have read your question.  Congratulations on a responsible attitude:  avoiding sex for a few ideas after you and your partner were treated for trichomoas was the right thing to do. But you were exactly right:  "we both believed we were supposed to stay away from penile/vaginal intercourse and not oral sex".  In addition, even though the official adivce is usually to avoid contact for a week, 5 days probably is enough, even for vaginal sex.

1) Your partner cannot be infected in the oral cavity.

2) Yes, at 5 days after treatment you can safely assume your infection had been cured.

3) You don't need to be retreated.

I hope this has helped.  Best wishes--  HHH, MD
