Foul Smelling Semen

Hello, I have been having this problem for the past 5 years I think. This is as far as I can remember back to first noticing the problem. Everytime I ejaculate, whether it be masturbation or intercourse, I get this nasty smell. It never used to be this bad, when I first started noticing it was about 5 years ago and I got a faint wiff of it when I bent down to pick something up. I couldn't work out where the smell was coming from at the time. Slowly it seems to have got worse and worse. To the point now that I only masturbate on the weekend because it takes two days to get rid of the smell at least. I'm obsessed with taking showers because of it. I have at least 3 showers a day. I have tried using only neutral soaps to using just about anything I can get my hands on. It seems that it only goes away after I have had about 6 showers. The smell still lingers even after about 4 days. I can't seem to get rid of this smell. I have been reading up about this allot lately as it is affecting my social life. To the point where I don't actually leave the house these days. To describe the smell, it's like a musty horrible smell which smells like strong cleaning products mixed with almost a feces smell. It's very worrying. I have had all kinds of tests done, from STDs, to HIV, Syphillis, prostate examination, even a flexible cystoscopy where the urologist looked down my urethra and at my prostate with a camera and everything was fine he said. I spoke to the STD doctor about the smell and he said he can't think of anything what it could be. First off, my diet is terrible. I eat allot of junk food like pizza, chinese, curries, burgers etc. I also smoke. I don't exercise or drink hardly any water either. I know this could have a huge effect on why my semen smells like this but it's hard to change habbits you have had for years. This seems to be almost unheard of from a professional perspective. From what I have read online about other people and them seeing doctors or urologists, they all seem to be stumped as to what it could be. This also has knock on effects like making me depressed, no social life, making excuses just so I don't have to go places were I will be in close proximity of people. I'm self employed and spend allot of time not in the office because of it and just simple things like avoiding my family as well. What can I do as this is drining me nuts?

They all give the same USELESS information in these threads.  I am in the same boat.  I am now 32 years old, and I started having this problem when I was around 25.  I went from having the 'normal' bleach-like smelling semen, to this nasty foul smelling semen.  It is literally so strong that after ejaculation, if I put it on a towel or paper towel, I can smell it on the other side of the room.  It has forced me to become sexually recluse and insecure about having sexual contact with others.  It is completely UNNATURAL and there isn't enough cigarettes in the world, unhealthy foods, or lack of water that could do or not do to ever create this smell (all of which I do NOT do).  I did everything from fasting, to liver cleanses, to juicing only diets, to getting every STD and available test for my prostate under the sun, to seeing urologists, who eventually just said, "you know some people just have bad smelling semen, the body changes over time" -- BULL CRAP.  Nothing shows up on the tests, so I guess this foul, strong smell must be mental right?  Well, that is what they are going to tell you!  Instead of admitting their incompetence or lack of real answers, its on you!  Bottom line, I know what semen smells like.  My semen smells exactly the way you two are explaining it.  No help has been given for this issue.  I look it up every few months in hopes someone who had this problem got it fixed and can point us into the right direction.  1,000 pineapples, 8 glasses of water a day, elimination of asparagus and half the other foods in the world, daily exercise, minimal fat, 20 exams, and a healthy lifestyle later, the problem still exists.  Can someone please speak out on this issue and help us! We are desperate!

Hello Mr. Anon, and NEEDALIFE I have been going through the same thing. I have been noticing the smell since 2013 and sometimes it seems to become more overpowering. I’m at wits on with all of this and need to find a solution.

I started to have this smell about months ago... less then a year.
Is not that heavy as you describe, but it changed from bleach-like to worn-out socket. I don;t what's happening and started to research now before going to doctor.

I always dated women seriously and now am single for good. Some women where allergic to latex and didn't wanted condoms...  like I don;'t 5 women I had intercourse without condoms... !? on one relation I got this stinking pain in the urethra and I thought it was because I pumped the womb a bit. like I opened my penis "crack" ?(or eye I dunno the right slang for it - sorry I am Brazilian as odd as may look reading me LOL) ... and after that the smells like comes and goes stronger. something I forget I wanted to go to the doctor... but started to suspicious about some bacteria like entered down the urethra and colonized my prostate or balls.
I have a kind of good history making women pregnant, don't want to loose that because the last one (mother of the second, but she is black and I'm german- came blue-eyed against the 75% genetic odd) and she don't let me see him. Maybe need another one to be fully a father- rsrs (sorry to open up like that)
The last girl I had intercourse, she had a Smell on her and now I kind of got it externally the smell.
when I bath I can scent it  strongly.
guess I'll need to spend more and get those ultra-thin Thailand condoms that feel even better than "on the skin" as we say here.

Im not going to use my real name on here and I am not a dude lol. However my fiancée had the same issue with his sperm smelling off and then it getting stronger. I of course jumped to he had to have an STD blah,blah running my.mouth at him. Long story short 3 Doctors and different testing lead us to this. #1 DRINK WATER!! #2 He had an Std he had HPV which by the time they found out what it was like the 4th and final Doctor said it hides!!! And you have to specifically ask for most STD testing aside from the main 3 when you get " Tested for STD's". He is on medication now and THANK GOD. I didn't contract it. But the smell is almost nonexistent now!! And regardless I still love him all the same. We all have a past. And I know it was harder on him then myself. So next time ask and look up what can change the smell of the seamen and how to treat it. But trust me it's something! Find the right test and Doctor

i also have  this problem but not as severe as u described. i have two questions- 1.how often do u masturbate 2.if u ejaculate continuously, is it only the first few time that the smell is bad or does the odour decrease.  semen can decompose just like all other organic stuff but it is faster and due to high protein content strong smell is expected. may be semen has been collecting internally and has been decomposing there, if you are testing how long you can resist the urges (you know).

if u ejaculate in your pants and wait long enough any semen sample is likely to smell.

After reading your problem, wow, it was like I had wrote it myself, for I to have 'exactly' the same problem, that started about 5yrs ago. I as most males know what my own ejaculate smells like, and until 5yrs ago it always smelt the same regardless to what I ate, then one night whilst having intercourse with my wife, with her sitting on me, facing me she squirmed and I got a sharp pain about 5inches up from my **** just left of my center line, kinda inline with my inner left thigh. I thought it was a torn Vas Deferens, (my impression is I'm leaking sperm into my lower abdomen on ejaculation which is then excreted out through the skin causing the smell down there, also my orgasm went from shooting out to oozing, this also has now changed to a yellowish colour, Since that sharp pain I have noticed my ejaculate smells totally off, I to went to the Dr and then urologist who all looked at me like I was a hypochondriac, telling me there is nothing wrong, I'm not sure if its related but the sweat from my groin area after sex smells the same as, for 3-4 days later, I to am depressed from this as no-one seems to know or even care about this personal embarrassing issue, so thank you for bringing it up. I would add the only internet help was the same as above, that I may have an infection, possibly in my prostate, though there is no internal pain and NO other symptoms.... oh other than my left testicle is a little tender when showering, and I have noticed I now get these pimples on my upper thighs also after climaxing, any help would be good.

I can assure the men here that they are NOT crazy.   As for the "fishy" smell, that is in my experience normal.   Ejaculate is loaded with vitamins and hormones.  If you have been taking vitamins check that.  Vitamin A is often made with fish oils.   If you take fish oil for your heart, or any vitamin A, E etc check those sources and stop or change them.    It's really simple sometimes that your urine, semen etc are going to smell to some extent to what you eat and drink.  duh, right?   However, most men are very familiar with what their semen smell like.   As I explained to my own boys when they reached the age "God seems to think you need to float a battleship with the stuff, so if you need to off load it to feel comfortable you are perfectly normal.    (Unhappy women skip this next part)  Young guys OFTEN masturbate 5 or more times a day even if they have sex, too.  I figured out in my 20's that 2 or 3 times at night was one thing, but she probably didn't want to do it again or at least not after her shower in the morning.   Solution,  "the sound of one hand clapping" as Bart Simpson says.

Most people associate the smell as being, "fishy". This is usually when the seamen has expelled for an hour or more. As a woman who has had different men, their smells vary. I know diet is huge in part of this. I'm married now, thank goodness he has very mild semen. Tasteless almost . This can be confusing but really quite simple. Has there been a change in the odor of the semen from what you  were used to? If so, is it sour, like a band aid that's been over a cut and the skin turns white and the band aid/cut develops a nasty smell? Semen can smell similar to that if there is an internal infection. UTI which really means urinary tract/bladder/etc. Simple to fix. Not considered an STD I don't believe.
Because it's caused by bacteria and not a virus the treatment is a specific type of antibiotic that wipes out bacteria. (cipro etc.) Powerful, dangerous stuff. Can cause tendon strain and heel tendon danger while medicated.
A Doctor must prescribe the right dose, so a trip to the Urgent Care Center or your DR is the ONLY way. Don't EVER even think about self prescribing this stuff!! (walk ins are ok in such places, best to go mid afternoon if possible, 2ish to avoid lunch/rush hours. Just research Urinary Tract infections and you will find all the info. Good luck and the cure is easy! Prevention includes urinating before and after sex and not sitting around in sweaty clothes, don't soak in tubs if possible..(if he is hurt and needs to soak in epsom salts/baths, hot tubs etc. just throw a condom on at least on the top part, and soak away the aches and pains. Simply keep junior's top part covered though in those hot baths/hot tubs etc. Bacteria getting in the urethra is what causes these infections I believe.

I have been trying really hard recently. I stopped smoking, have been eating healthier. Have been eating pro-biotics, mixing powdered fibre into my drinks. I must say I haven't been drinking as much water as I could be though.

How can that honestly have any serious affect on the smell of it? I have just masturbated about an hour ago and the smell is very intense like a horrible methane type smell. It's hard to explain. The doctors think I'm nuts.

I was tested for everything several times and all came back fine. Yet this crazy odour persists. I'm at the end of my teather here. I'm so depressed about it, feel like throwing myself off a bridge sometimes!

Well not drinking enough water could have Big effect on that. Ive been told that if men eat a lot a fruit its makes their semen better. Also drink cranberry juice!!!
