Could This Mole Be Melanoma?

Hello, I recently noticed that one of my moles on the left side of my hip has started to get a scab like thing on it but I’m not sure if it is from rubbing on clothing since it is on my hip.

The reason I’m concerned is because it use to be slightly raised like an interdermal mole but was soft and squishy and now it’s almost like a pimple kind of. It’s tan and color but now the scab or cut on it has started to bleed.

Also it is painful but not when I touch it. When water or something hits it though it hurts. It’s almost like a throbbing pain around the mole and the mole itself.

I’m scared this could be melanoma?
Please help me with this anxiety. I can’t stop thinking about it now but it’s weird because it never use to be painful or hurt until it got the cut on it.

Definitely have it checked out. Prior to a story I heard last week, I would have tended to say it's probably nothing to worry about. But someone was telling me about his 17 YO daughter who had a bump (of normal skin color no less) on her hip. She wanted it removed because it would catch on her underwear. The derm told her dad that it would cost $400 since it didn't appear suspicious hence insurance would not pay so it was not removed. Fast forward to a year later when she turned 18 and she went back to the derm and said now that she could make her own health care decisions, she wanted it removed. Per the pathologist, it didn't seem normal. It was examined by three different pathologists and determined to be melanoma. Best of luck to you. Let us know what you find out.

I didn't really finish my thought - unless your hip area has been exposed to a lot of sun, the chances are extremely low that it is melanoma.

Thank you for the response. I really appreciate it. Maybe it’s just my anxiety. I didn’t think much of it, but when that area began hurting and I had a burning sensation in that part of my hip I immediately went into overdrive thinking it had to do with the mole since it was bleeding and hurting a bit as well. It doesn’t hurt as much now but I’ll definitely watch over it and see if it heals. I covered it up with a bandage so that’s a good thing.

I would definitely say I’ve had my fair share of sunburns, especially considering I’m 22, but never been a sun worshiper nor do I have any family history of it in my family that I know of.

Also to your last point, that’s definitely a spot that rarely gets any sun since I tend to keep it covered with clothing. Hopefully this is all just my anxiety and nothing more.

Thank you again!
Izzy, you should have it removed and examined under the microscope. Do NOT rely on anyone eyeballing it. The answer is under the 'scope.  Sure, sun exposure can be a factor...but NOT necessarily.  Melanomas can occur anywhere including palms, soles, crack of butt, perineum, literally anywhere. DO NOT TAKE A CHANCE. While I agree it may just be chafing from clothes, etc., do NOT take the chance. With respect to your age, long ago when I was in practice, I had a 19 year old boy die from melanoma after I sent him for surgical removal. Good luck. Be proactive.

Well, it's not possible for us to diagnose whether it may be cancer or not over the internet.  HOWEVER, melanoma usually occurs due to repeated exposure to the sun, and sunburns.  Not always, but that is the highest risk factor.  It could be, as you suspected, the fact that it is on a place where it gets abraded by clothing.  While it is sensitive, you might try putting a bandaid over it, or a patch designed for foot corns and callouses (they are stickier).

In the meantime, check this article for signs and risk factors: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/melanoma/symptoms-causes/syc-20374884
If you are concerned, it is always best to have a doctor take a look.
