Whatever you do, do not lay in bed and brood over not being able to sleep. If you haven't fallen asleep within 20 minutes, get up and do something relaxing. Take a warm bath, drink warm milk, read a boring book, anything that allows the mind to drift. Soft music helps a lot, or a Sound Machine. Stat off the computer...it is way too stimulating!!! Try some relaxation routines, you have nothing to lose except insomnia.
Hi, your symptoms are suggestive of insomnia. It is important to categorize the type of insomnia, which can be done after noting detailed history. Insomnia usually constitutes impaired daytime function due to difficulty initiating sleep, difficulty maintaining sleep, chronically nonrestorative sleep, or poor quality sleep. This is common during such circumstances esp. with the family conditions, stress and responsibilities.
For stress, you need a suggestion therapy and few medications to alleviate the anxiety. You need to talk freely with closed ones like family or friends. Go for morning walk and relaxation therapy will help.
The initial steps you need to take are sleep hygiene education, stimulus control, relaxation, sleep restriction, cognitive therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, phototherapy, and chronotherapy. These therapies can be prescribed by clinicians at any level but it can be better implemented by sleep specialist.
Medical therapy involves use of benzodiazepines, Nonbenzodiazepines, Melatonin agonist or Diphenhydramine against prescription for short duration.
I suggest you to consult physician/sleep specialist for further management. Take care and regards.
