I can’t sleep

I’ve had this on and off now for about 6-8 months. I get home from work between 11pm-1am. I come home make dinner and eat and get into bed. I cannot fall asleep till at least 4 am no matter what i try. I’ve taken pills to help me sleep and those helped but i don’t want to have to resort back to them.

Suggest working on wake up time to fix this.  If you set and keep it very consistent every day without sleeping in or napping later, you can expect to get drowsy roughly 16 hours later.  Consistency over time is key.

Your cortisol may be high at the wrong time of the day.  Its a stress hormone.  I had Insomnia for a long time and found a book from the sleep specialist that helped.
