Staying asleep

hello
I normally have no trouble going to sleep when i first get to bed, but wake after a couple of hours, and then find it really hard to get back off.  i try not to get up as i think it makes it worse, but i hate tossing and turning around in my bed, it drives me mad! I have tried chamomile tea, which is what get me to sleep in the first place, but i'd love to go to bed - sleep - and wake in the morning and feel like I've had a good night.
Any suggestions?
Teresa

Thank you for your help. I suffer from Restless Leg symdrome, although i havent had it diagnosed properly. And i did suffer very badly from PLMD about a year ago when i was on anti-depressants. I dont feel like i 'twitch' myself awake, but i just cant get comfortable.
I would like to get a sleep study done, how i would i go about that? Go to my GP?
Thanks

Lots of things can affect being able to sustain sleep or regain sleep after waking. Some meds and even alcohol can adversely affect sleep. Even what we eat and when. Thyroid issues can also, plus sleep disorders.

Your description of "i hate tossing and turning around in my bed, it drives me mad" made me wonder if there's any chance you could have periodic limb movements. Before I was diagnosed with PLMD, I described my sleep as shallow, fitful, restless, miserable and agitated. I too could fall asleep easily but not stay asleep, mostly hovering somewhere betwixt and between, dipping in and out repeatedly.

If your sleep problems are longstanding, maybe getting a sleep study would identify the cause of your poor sleep and lead to restoring healthy sleep.
