Waking about every hour

Hi, I have delayed sleep phase syndrome, so sleeping at night is already a chore for me, and I'm pretty sure this is related to my syndrome, but want to ask around anyway, maybe it's not. When I say DSPS, for me this means that my normal sleep schedule is to go to bed between 4 and 6am and wake between noon and 2pm. With work, I have to be up by 5:30am to get on the road. I have been trying to get to bed by 10, and did it one night, but not the others. Last night, I didn't get to sleep until 1am. Whether I get to bed at 10 or later, I wake repeatedly throughout the night. Last night, with 4 hours and 45 minutes of sleep time, I woke 4 times. The night before, with 6 hours and 15 minutes of sleep, I woke 7 times.

I don't dream, because I don't get to that stage of sleep unless I sleep during the day. If I sleep during my normal times (4/6am to 12/2pm), I sleep like a normal person, straight through for 8 hours with one wake if any.

Any ideas?

Hi Jewel85, how are you? Thanks for your reply. I agree it may be difficult to change your sleep cycle but it is possible if you are determined. As a normal adult if you get 7-8 hours sleep at night and if a short nap in daytime can be bonus. Do you work part time? Try to sleep little early and may be you can woke up as usual. Try to do fine work where you need to concentrate more and may be reading your favorite book or listening to your favorite music may be helpful. Physical therapy and massage therapy also may help. Do consult a sleep doctor and update on your progress. Take care.

I'm doing good, thank you...not too shabby..

I am 23 years old next month, and have had delayed sleep phase syndrome since I was little bitty..my mother describes me as a pre-schooler wandering the hall or reading a book in the wee hours and not able to sleep. I have always been one to sleep during the day and stay up until the wee hours.

The waking every hour has started ever since I started forcing myself to go to bed by 10/11pm, and forcing myself to wake early in the morning (5am/6am).

I don't drink alcohol at all these days, and I try to avoid caffeine 6 hours before bed (tho I don't always succeed, but whether I avoid caffeine or not has not made any difference that I've seen). And I don't smoke.

After I do a month of sleep log, I will go see a doctor to get a sleep study done for this new problem.

Hi Jewel85, how are you? Can you give some details regarding from when are you facing this sleep disturbance? How old are you and what do you do? I feel your body clock has got tuned to the sleep cycle you are currently following hence any change in your usual sleep cycle is making you to wake up frequently. It may take some time to get used to change in sleep time. Avoid alcohol, excessive coffee/tea or smoking at nights. It is a good idea to get sleep study done and consult a sleep specialist and get evaluated.
