Hello and hope you are doing well.

Agree with you that sleep is all important and can cause hypertension and other metabolic disorders. A lot of studies have been done to highlight the importance of sleep and its rejuvenating capacity. Sleep is required to heal; it causes regeneration of the neurons within the cerebral cortex. Prolonged sleep loss leads to episodes of ‘micro sleep’, where in the person has several seconds of actual sleep in between wakefulness, this leads to a decrease in performance and in turn behavior. The implications as such are many, micro sleep episodes are the commonest cause for accidents. So, adequate sleep is essential. Warm regards.

I have had sleep trouble for years and seen every sleep specialist in my area. I have been on every drug out there and had 3 sleep studies.  I have researched and been taught about my disorders and other sleep disorders.  Padieria may be right about the delayed phase syndrome.  However, even though it is VERY uncommon to die from lack of sleep, it is possible. But, as I said in my earlier post, it would take a very prolonged period of NO sleep at all. However, it is more likely that you will suffer psychological problems and have serious health issues.  I say this from both research and personal experience.  Not sleeping a full night's sleep seriously impacts your body's ability to repair itself.  This will cause immune problems, and metabolic changes which can cause you to have diabetes, heart disease and many other unpleasant and serious disorders and diseases.  So while you may not actually die from lack of sleep, you could die from these other conditions that were caused by lack of sleep or made worse by it. Padieria is incorrect in using the term 'sleep debt'.  Sleep Debt is what you accumulate from not sleeping and some researchers say you cannot catch it up, while others say it takes a long time to do so.  I would take Padiera's advice about seeing your primary care physician for a referral to a sleep specialist.  The disorder you may have of delayed phase syndrome, is one that can be corrected. Good luck.

Hello,

You could be having an entity called delayed phase syndrome, where in the biological clock is reset and occurs late. It is a circadian rhythm disorder, but lack of sleep is unlikely to cause death. There is a circadian rhythm for all living organisms. It is a 24 hour cycle rhythm and the biological clock within that individual adapts to this rhythm. This can be reset by bright light therapy, sleeping pills and sometimes by sleep debt. In sleep debt, though you happen to sleep late, you condition yourself to get up early; this in turn will help you to sleep early. So, try this, but if your symptoms still persist, I would advise you to discuss your symptoms with your primary care physician who may then refer you to a sleep specialist for further evaluation. Warm regards.

please see my answer regarding your sleep issues.  I mentioned that you should sleep in a dark room.
i wanted to add that if you just cannot sleep at night, you may want to try a natural sleep aid from the health food store.
Good luck!

It is actually true that you can die from lack of sleep, but you would have to go without any sleep at all over a prolonged period of time.
What is more likely is that you will disrupt your immune system and every other system in your body by not allowing it to repair itself during sleep.  When you sleep your body undergoes growth and repair while in the Stage 3 and Stage 4 periods of sleep.  Without sleeping and allowing your body to repair, you will begin to have all sorts of health problems.  You raise your risk of heart disease, cancer, and so much more.
Do yourself a favor and begin trying to settle yourself in to bed earlier.  Ideally, you should be in bed sleeping by 10 pm at night.  You should sleep in a pitch dark room because any light can disrupt your production of melatonin which governs your sleep and wake cycles.
Good luck, i hope you can start to get your sleep under control.

not really. You may end up having some issues IF it goes on long enough. BUT actually dying from it NO.
