Urgent inquiry - Stroke with Bacterial Infection

Dear Doctor,

My mother name is Gulzar, Age - 49 yrs. During the month of Oct-11, she had symptoms like fever, vomiting and head ache for 15 days, on the 15th day she had altered speech. In the mean time she tried different hospitals, Finally the doctors diagnosed it as Bacterial infection in the brain (TB meningitis) through the LP test. They started with the Anti-biotics, She started recovering, She was recovering.. She was given high dosage of Anti-biotics (Steroids)

Suddenly one day the doctors took a scan and they found it she has hydrocephalus, but the pressure level came under control. She was again admitted, She was talking, She was performing the Physiotherapy exercises in a very good way. The doctor suggested she should be given a tablet for depression as she was crying some times.. After the tablet she was sleeping for 3 days, then the doctors told us, she has minor strokes.. because of which she was not able to speak, eat or move.. On march 5th 2012 - She had a massive stroke because of which she was in coma for 2 days..

Now its already been more than one month since she had that stroke, Her BP, Sugar level, breathing, Oxygen level is normal.

She is bed ridden for almost 3 months now.. is there any hope she can recover..

Please let me know if you need any further details..

Please reply..

Regards,
Haseeb Ahmed

Its a teriible situation, Life is like hell for the past 6 months.. i don't understand why god punishes us.. I honestly don't know what will happen..

Now she follows the sleep awake cycle, She slowly moves her hands, legs.. but she does not talk.. I can't see my mother like this.. God is very unfair with some of us..

take care..

Dear Haseeb123,
My deepest regrets on your mother's serious illnesses.  I know you and your family must be going through a lot of stress.  It is really hard to say if your mother will regain her functioning ability.  The brain is an amazing organ however and the window of recovery is usually one year.  After that window in closed, usually her deficits will be deemed permanent.  Her best shot of regaining her ability to be mobile is to keep up the physical therapy.  It is a hard road but urge her not to give up!
Take care,
