What is a Mini Stroke? What are the signs?

Transient Ischemic Attacks which are commonly called mini strokes have been in the news lately with former NFL star Tedy Bruschi being the victim of this health issue in early July of 2019. Bruschi was lucky because he knew the warning signs TIA's or mini strokes and sought medical attention.  He experienced  arm weakness, face drooping and speech difficulties.

So what exactly is a Transient Ischemic Attack?  It's a brief  interruption of blood flow to part of the brain that causes temporary stroke-like symptoms.

Symptoms of a mini stroke can include confusion, weakness and lethargy. They can experience weakness or paralysis on one side of their body. This can be the entire side or just an arm or a leg. Facial drooping is common. There can speech difficulty and vision loss. If the mini stroke occurs in a different location it can cause a sudden collapse or 'drop' and fall or difficulty walking.

What makes a TIA different than a full stroke is that it will resolve.  However, it is a warning sign of a future stroke and requires immediate medical attention.
