stroke help

I am writing this email in regards to my father-in-law on the behalf of his wife. he has been suffering from erectile disfunction since his stroke in 2004. My mother in-law is concerned about his penis because it is reseeding in, to the point that when he needs to use the washroom that his wife needs to help with they both have a difficult time trying to get it out in time since he has little controll over is bladder. I was wondering what causes this and if there is anything that can help him. He is on a lot of meds so something that does not involve a lot of medicine to help him would be greatly appreciated.

Hi CRSJETTJT, how are you and how is your father-in-law doing? How old is he now and how well he manages to do his daily activities of living without an attendant? There are many causes for erectile dysfunction and also various treatment options depending on the age and cause of erectile dysfunction. Some of the causes are " Damage to nerves, arteries, smooth muscles, and fibrous tissues, often as a result of disease, is the most common causes. Diseases such as diabetes, kidney disease, chronic alcoholism, multiple sclerosis, atherosclerosis, vascular disease, and neurologic disease also cause erectile dysfunction. Lifestyle choices that contribute to heart disease and vascular problems also raise the risk of erectile dysfunction. Smoking, being overweight, and avoiding exercise are possible causes of erectile dysfunction". You can get more information through this link http://kidney.niddk.nih.gov/kudiseases/pubs/impotence/index.htm
Take care and update on his progress.
