What can I do about my irregular periods?

Hi, I'm 18 and my periods have always been very irregular. The shortest cycle I've had has been 35 days, the longest has been about 4 months. There is no pattern whatsoever and they don't seem to get any shorter. So I was wondering if I should see a doctor or if this is still ok at my age (I've started my period at 12). I'm worried that I'm just prescribed the pill because I really want to know what's going on in my body and how I can treat this condition. Thanks in advance! (sorry for any language mistakes, English isn't my mother tongue :))
