Does anyone have any tips on how to stop cutting? Besides the typical go to therapy...

Hi. There are other ways to distract yourself. I'm Anna I'm 14 and I cut myself as well.

I have a few different methods.
1. Put on a hoodie and wrap duct tape around the wrists over the jumper. This slows down the process of getting to your arm to slit your wrist. Then wrap your blade in duct tape too, this keeps it from being sharp. And finally, distract yourself, e.g call a friend over the phone and tell them how you are feeling or read a book or play a game outside. When your not thinking about it, you won't feel the urges.

2. Tell your family and they will help you. It may be in an over the top way but its for the best.

3. Call a helpline and tell them about your situation and just talk about it. Talking is a good way to let off steam.

4. Go for a walk. A ten minute walk can help you at any time of the day. If its night, walk on a treadmill or walk laps around the house.

Let me know if I was any help (: xx

Hun, I have the same question. I am trying the butterfly project where you draw a butterfly where ever you want to cut, name it after someone you care about, and then if you do cut you kill someone you care about's butterfly. You can not wash it off it needs to go Away on its own. It's been fairly successful.

Hi there, I'm sorry you're having to go through this.
Therapy can be brilliant for you, but if not there are a lot of charities out there who do group work. Where I live we have a charity called Zest which takes in teens who struggle with self harm, get them to discuss things and realise that in this day and age it is pretty common.
You should try see if there is anything similar accessible to you in your community.
If not I guess it's all about finding some other outlet for your emotions. Spot the warning signs. Remember that the cutting is a temporary solution and it leaves you with a lot of regrets. You have to address what it is that's making you cut.

The only thing is that you have to do this for yourself, not for anyone else. You have to fight and stay determined. Don't give into the urges.
Recently I cut and ended up in hospital with 4 stitches, my whole family had to find out that I cut and it was a horrible experience. You don't want to end up like this, you have you're whole life ahead of you. It's such a hard habbit to kick. But doctors, MedHelp and charities can give you all the tools and help you need.

If you ever feel the urge to cut or anything, just message me and I can distract you if you like.
All the best. Be strong!

both thatquietgirl and heidi are right...two magnificient views :D
I think one of the most important things to do before anything else is make the choice one that you can feel burning inside of you.  Then find someone or something to quite cutting for.  use your dreams, your hobbies, your family...whatever it is, don't let go and continue to fight the urges for them.  Cutting is a hard thing to stop, I know, but I also know that you CAN do this :)
Message me if you'd like someone to talk to :)

My therapist recommended an ice cube.  If you feel the urge, go grab a whole ice cube and hold it in your hand even when it gets to the point of discomfort.  Before it has a chance to finish melting, distract yourself with something that you enjoy.  Continue to let it melt.

Cutting's a hard habit to kick.  You'll probably constantly struggle with urges, and you need to get to the bottom of the reasons you do so.  Many of us aren't able to be objective or introspective enough to do that ourselves, which is why therapy is recommended.

If you are the one who is cutting, I'm sorry that you are going through this. My name is Heidi and I am 39 years old. I can't say I used to cut myself a lot but about 6-10 times I did, all out of anger, frustration and attention. I can tell you, that after I slit my wrists and needed stitches 2 different times, I felt better after. It was like a release, cutting myself and watching the blood flow was like getting rid of demons. I can't tell you how I stopped it, I was getting really embarrassed when people seen the scars on my wrists. I started a journal and when I felt the urge to cut, I would write down my feelings and emotions instead, then sometimes I would burn it after. (the pages out of the journal) I haven't cut in 2 years. Try it and let me know. BTW...I have several binders full of thoughts and emotions. I look back and think WTF. But at the time it was an issue. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Good Luck
