Positive ANA but no antibodies

Dr. Lupo,

I'm 60 years old and I was diagnosed with Auto Immune Thyroiditis (Hashimotos) in February.  My Thyroid levels were as follows:

TSH 3.17
Free T4  0.9
Free T3  2.5
ANA 1:80  speckled pattern

My Thyroid also showed no antibodies that you would normally have with Hashimotos, yet the Endocrinologist I saw says I do have it because of my positive ANA and also all my symptoms.  My question to you is this---  Is it possible to have Hashimotos even if you show no antibodies but your ANA is positive?  I do have most of the symptoms of Thyroid disease, but haven't heard of too many people on these forums that don't have the antibodies but yet have Hashimotos.

I have also been to a Rheumatologist, and all the tests for auto immune diseases came out negative except the ANA.

Thanks for any information on this.  Terri

Looks like your thyroid antibodies are high, so that probably does mean Hashimotos.  Mine were negative as I stated above, but dx was based on my positive ANA.

I think that the heart does have something to do with the thyroid, because I got angina from my thyroid going untreated for so long, that's what my endo told me anyway.  My throat is tight too, but thank god I haven't had any palpatations in a while.  I'm on a calcium channel blocker for my angina.

ANA is nonspecific and should not be used to diagnose Hashimoto's.
The TSH is borderline and 10% of Hashi has negative TPO/Tg antibodies - so this is probably Hashi (which sometimes can lead to a positive ANA).

Thanks doctor.  I was wondering if the Hashi diagnoses was accurate or not as my thyroid levels are near normal and I don't have the antibodies.  This helps me alot.  Thanks,  Terri
