Can Prevacid interfere with your thyroid hormone replacement?

Dr. Mark,

I am currently taking Synthroid (150mg) and Cytomel (5-10mg) and starting taking Prevacid for chronic heartburn about a month ago (after a bout of stomach flu) I had never suffered from heartburn before in my life.  In the last few weeks I've had severe fatigue, weight gain, my skin and hair are much drier, bloating in the stomach, a hard time sleeping at night and a feeling of fullness for up to 16 hours after I eat.  I am wondering if the Prevacid is interfering with my thyroid medication?  Is this a possibility?  Or is it something else?

Thanks!
Jenni

would stick with the prevacid (as it works for the heartburn) and adjust the thyroid meds as necessary following labs every 5-6 weeks until appropriately titrated.

Dr. Mark,

I had my levels tested and their were very low.  Is there anything else I can take for the heartburn that won't interfere with my thyroid meds?  I am currently taking Zantac and that doesn't seem to help at all.  I have also tried Tagamet, Tums and Rolaids and have had no luck with any of them.  Thanks for your help!

It's possible that the change in stomach acid has changed the absorption of thyroid meds - best way to know is to repeat the thyroid labs and see what's happening.
