Graves disease

Hi, I am a 28 year old woman and was diagnosed with graves disease 3 years ago.  I have commented o many forums regarding my problem but would like your advice.  I was treated with radio active iodine in 2006 and then became hypothyroid, I now take 150mg of levothyroxine daily.  I have never suffered from graves opthalmology as far as i'm aware.

For the last 6 months I have had a chronic daily headache.  This started 3 days after purchasing new glasses.  Since then I have seen a neurologist and had a ct scan.  I have tried many different medications including anti depressants, beta blockers and am now on anti epileptics, none have helped.  Other symptoms I have are - my left pupil is slightly larger than my right, my left eye twitches when reading, extreme pain when looking upwards which increases my headache, double vision when reading, blurred vision, itchy and irritated eyes.

I have had an eye test and the optician said I had slight astigmatism.  She thinks my glasses might be too strong and wants to change them.  Could I have eye symptoms so long after my treatment?  I am so confused and depressed, i'm not sure what to do next.  My eyes don't look bulgy but my graves disease was very hard to diagnose as I showed little signs of it.  Even though my t4 was above 80.  Any advice would be greatly received.  Thankyou very much

It is possible to have thyroid eye disease even at this point in time with this history.  More likely it is due to the glasses prescription given the onset of symptoms 3 days after new glasses -- would work with your ophthalmologist to adjust the prescription but remind them you have Graves to make certain your symptoms are not related.

Hi, I have just got back from the optician and she recommends I purchase new glasses containing a prism so my eyes don't have to work so hard to focus (my eye muscles seem to be working overtime).  She has also recommended I have my thyroid function tested and has written to my doctor recommending a referral to an eye specialist to thoroughly check my eye muscles are working correctly (due to my graves history).  In the meantime I am going to start taking the topiramate, unfortunately new glasses are costly and I cannot afford them right now, especially because I am unsure this is the problem.  I am probably going to wait until my appointment with the eye specialist.

Hi , I have seen my doctor.  I have to stop the gabapentin over ten days then start topiramate (another anti epileptic).  He is going to write to my neurologist so I will probable have an appointment to see him in the new year.  I expect then I will get an MRI.  I can't see these new tablets working, if the other anti epileptics have failed??  He doesn't think it is my glasses or a cyst!!  So I suppose I try these and wait, still going to my eye appt tomorrow but unsure whether to purchase new glasses!  He just gave me a funny look when I said about my double vision aaah!

Thank you very much for your reply, I hope it is my glasses but don't want to miss anything.  I have worn my contact lenses for the last 48 hours to see if anything changes but my symptoms are still apparent.  How is thyroid eye disease diagnosed and treated?  Would anything have shown on my ct scan? Thank you again.
