multiple nodules

If you have multiple nodules, do most doctors biopsy all of them. I found a nodule in my neck months ago and then had an ultrasound. The ultrasound showed I had 5 nodules instead of just one. The doctor did a biopsy on the biggest nodule and the results came back no cancer. I was then sent to a surgeon who recommended a thyroidectomy so I would't have to have biopsys every 3 months. I had the surgery 1 week ago today and the doctor was really surprised. The 2 smallest nodules that weren't biopsied had cancer in them. What would have happened if they didn't take the entire thyroid out? I recommend that everyone get every nodule biopsied.

This is common -- in cases of multiple nodules, it is common to see that the "dominant" nodule is not the cancer and FNA of the dominant (largest) nodule is often misleading.  Not every nodule needs FNA -- this is where careful ultrasound by an expert can help pick out the ones that need FNA biopsy.  If the cancers were small (<1cm) then I-131 is not likely needed.
