Child with mottled teeth - could be thyroid problem?

Dear Dr. my question is regarding my son who is 7.  He had a dentist appointment that confirmed his teeth are growing in mottled.  As a parent I am very concerned so I did some research which suggests that the thyroid is responsible for this condition.  Here is an exerpt from one of the articles I read....
"Identical enamel defects were observed in iodine-deficient areas already more than 80 years ago (McKay, 1918), making it clear that this enamel condition is  brought upon by thyroid dysfunction (aberrant G-protein signalling) during the time of enamel formation. The fact that the severity of fluorosis is directly correlated to eruption of teeth, is a further sign of the implication, as since at least the 1930s has it been known that thyroid hormones control tooth eruption. "
Could this mean he has thyroid problems?  Should I have him checked by an endocrinologist?  I have Hashimoto's and my brother also just found out he is hypothyroid.
I don't know if there is any treatment for mottled teeth, is the damage already done before the teeth even erupt?

My daughter's teeth are erupting mottled. She has not had fluoride in her diet when she was younger. However, I became hypothyroid in the late stages of  pregnancy and carried on undiagnosed until she was six months old baby. As you can imagine, this was a real struggle for me and I wonder whether the consequence of me becoming hypothyroid in late stage of pregnency, are her mottled teeth! No one was able to answer this for me. I wonder whether you have had any information since your first post on this website (which I can see dates back to 2009!) and also, how is your son now? Have all his teeth erupted mottled?

Thank you for your comments.  I don't know how he could have taken an excess amount of floride to the extent to cause this.  How much would he need to have ingested?  He is an extremely bright (always ahead of grade level), physically advanced (motor skills) and otherwise no issues except excema/allergies.  
I guess my big question is whether I can change the outcome of his front teeth before they come out.  They diagnosed this by seeing his back permanent teeth.

Too much fluoride intake (usually from water source or swallowing of fluoridated toothpaste) can cause this too...there may be other causes as well...If you suspect it's from flouride, an excess of it can cause neurological damage as well...~MM

This isn't the expert forum, but in my opinion if a 7 year old had a thyroid problem he would have much more symptoms, low development, etc:,

About that article, I think it's an old one, I was looking for recent ones and I just found that possible causes are dental fluorosis because of Elevated fluoride levels during enamel maturation, but I think it is an interesting subject, you could also ask in dental health expert forum.
