Follow Up

Hi All,

I was wondering how long do I have to follow up with my doctors for Graves Disease once they start weening me off of my medicine (methimazole) in a couple of months and how long it takes for me to be completely off of my meds for good once they start weening me off.

Once your thyroid is back to normal again, you will probably only have be monitored periodically... again, that will depend on your doctor; however, anyone with a known thyroid condition should have thyroid function tests, periodically, to make sure everything remains under control.  

For the most part, symptoms, or lack of, will tell you whether or not, you need a doctor's care if you aren't on medication.

I was promised to be weened off a month ago, but I wasn't allowed for school reasons. I was wondering if I need follow ups for Graves for the rest of my life?

Everyone is individual, so no one can answer your questions.  It's up to your doctor, how you ween off the med, or even "if" you should ween off, and how often you should follow up once you're off the med.
