Guidance on TSH Range

Hello All,

I received my TSH test results today and it came out to be 7.19 ulU/ML. I am being told that the normal range is .34 - 5.6. Could you please suggest what this number indicates.

I would appreciate if you could please guide me on this range as am little worried about what it would have an impact on my future lifestyle.

Thanks in advance.

Nidhi,

Sound like a good plan. The TSH will increase as we approach a normal bedtime (11-12) and remain higher until afternoon. Those 2 values you have are either a lab error, or the is a thyroid issue going on with you.

Just be consistant on the time of the test. I personally do early am.

Hi,

Thank you for your time and guidance!

The earlier test which has TSH around 7.19 was done in the evening and the later TSH, T3 and T4 tests were done in the morning with empty stomach.

I showed the reports to the doctor and she is suspecting one of the reports to be wrong. I am going for one more round of all three tests in a few days. I would keep you posted on the results and in the mean time any guidance on the subject would be of great help and satisfaction to me.

Thanks,

It is not normal to see such a big fluctuation.
The TSH normally varies by only 0.75 in a day. So if your TSH was 1 and then it was 1.5, that is OK. Yours jumped too much.

Was the first test in the early am as well? TSH is usually highest in the early morning and lowers in the afternoon.

Thanks so much both of you! Appreciate your help and guidance.

Let me update you on the second part of the story, I went to the lab for the T3 and T4 test (in the morning empty stomach) and also i requested for the TSH test again. Earlier TSH test was 15 days back, now today i have got my results and found out that all three - TSH, T3 and T4 are in the normal range. My TSH which came 7.19 earlier has come down to 3.6 in a 15 days time.

I am not sure what has happened in the last 15 days. I have few questions - (a) Does TSH varies so much in a span of 15 days. (b) The test was done in the same lab, should is suspect that the report is wrong?

Would appreciate your light and insight on this.

Thanks,
Nidhi

I just want to add this resource about the reference range:

http://jcem.endojournals.org/cgi/content/full/90/9/5483

If your TSH tests about the same or higher again, you should start meds (if you have symptoms).

Make sure you have FREE t3/4 tests run, not total t3/4. Your results for these will likely be in the low-normal range. They usually stay in range, albeit low end, until the TSH goes over 10.

Thyroid antibodies may pose a problem, if present, in trying to conceive, though not always.

I had 2 healthy children before knowing I had Hashimoto's Hyporthyroidism.

AR-10 gave excellent advice, as well.

Good luck!

Thank You!

Your guidance is really helpful and also my doctor has referred me for the T3 and T4 tests. I have few more questions - (a) If it is confirmed that i have a thyroid disorder, how it would impact my lifestyle and (b) does it couses any problem in planning fr a kid.....i have a 3 and half year old son and am planing for the second kid.

Would appreciate your further guidance on this.

Thanks,
Nidhi

It indicates that right now you are a little low on thyroid hormones. It strongly suggests that you need further tests run, and possibly you may need to start taking thyroid hormone medication.

The usual course of action is to wait a few weeks and then have another TSH test run. Also, A Free T4 test, a Free T3 test, and some antibody tests. TPOab and TGab.

The Free T4 and Free T3 tests measure the amount of thyroid hormones in your blood.

The antibody tests will either confirm or rule out an autoimmune thyroid condition.

TPOab has four different names. It is called Thyroid Peroxidase antibodies, antimicrosomal antibodies, and two other names.

TGab has two different names. It is called Thyroglobulin antibodies, or antithyroglobulin antibodies.

I hope this helps you.
