How do iI stop choking after parathyroidectomy

Hi.  I had surgery on my parathyroid in november of 2017.  Since then I've felt like someone is choking me and then I start gagging.  my voice is fine though.  It seems to have gotten worse since I've been diagnosed with high blood sugar or type 2 diabetes.  does anyone have any answers for me?

Both surgery and diabetes depleted magnesium and a symptom of low magnesium is gagging/choking.
