Hypo and Hashi - need help

Ok, so let me start from the top.

I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism in 2003. Multi nodular thyroid gland and my TSH was at a 7.
I took Armour for about 2 months and felt great!  My levels went down to TSH 5.0. But, then my thyroid started "to work again" (quote the endo) Which she said she had never seen this happen before.  So, then I became HYPER.. My symptoms all changed.

I am 5'8
currently 127lbs

So, after all that, I decided to change my daily life and get off the armour and the synthroid.  (also, keep in mind I was on the lowest dosage possible for both armour and synthroid)
I stopped taking birth control.. no fast food. no sods.. no alcohol (alcohol can suppress thyroid activity)
Started taking supplements (omegas, greens, low dairy, selenium)

In 2007 my TSH was 12.

Since 2007, I have had very regular periods.. sleeping great.. low anxiety.. hair and skin normal, heart rate a little fast but not as bad as before.

2011, I just had my levels checked after being off meds for 4 years, My TSH is 11. and my sonogram showed that my thyroid has not grown since 2007. which is good i guess.. but I still have antibodies attacking my thyroid?? so confused and my endo can not figure out why i feel so great and have little to no symptoms.

So, I went to go see a herbalist, (eastern medicine)

She thinks that it may not be my thyroid at all..since i was reacting so well to the meds and it was throwing my levels all over the place.  She suggested maybe my liver was congested and not converting T3 to T4 or my pitulitary gland is off and not telling my thyroid to do its job..

Has anyone had any of these same issues?

Im so confused and i just want to fix the actual problem ..

thank you
:)

Iodine is usually not recommended for people with Hashimoto's, and only under the supervision of a doctor.

It takes 4-6 weeks for the synthroid to take effect, so unless you were having a reaction to the fillers/binders, I doubt your symptoms were caused by the synthroid after only 4 days.

You're right - the antibodies will eventually destroy your thyroid; there's basically nothing you can do to stop it.  The most you can do is control the symptoms.

I actually "wanted" the destruction process to get over with, so I would be on complete hormone replacement, which seems to make it easier to control med doses, because the thyroid is no longer "helping", which can cause fluctuations in hormone levels.

I don't know that you need to have your pituitary or liver tested at this point.  What you really need is the Free T3 and Free T4, along with the TSH, as gimel suggested.

I do have hashimotos. .. they didnt tell me what the level of antibodies were, they just told me they were present and put me on steriods and up'ed my armour.. which forced me into HYPER.  Its so weird.  My doc only tests TSH.  My last labs were taken 1 month ago and my TSH was 11.  in 2007 it was 12.  I have a multi nodular thyroid gland.  I asked him to check the antibodies again (since they were last tested 4 years ago) He told me that since they were present in the past, that there was no reason to check for them bc he was certain they were still there.  My sonogram on my thyroid showed a lot of nodules but not a Dominant nodule, so he ruled out thyroid cancer..
My problem is .. yes, I feel fine, but I still have a large gland and hasimotos.. So, I am not just going to sit back and wait for my thyroid to die.
Thats why I went to an herbalist.  She suggested that maybe have my liver checked and my pitulitary gland.  to see if there is something else causing my TSH to be out of wack.

My main goal would be to decrease the size of my thyroid and stop the attack of antibodies...  My body has simply adjusted to the levels (for now)

Its only a matter of time before my thyroid is destroyed.. I want to try something to help

I took .25mcg of Synthroid 3 weeks ago.. I was on it for about 4 days and FELT AWFUL
-headaches
-weight lose
-depression
-lack of energy
- after eating, feeling weird
I stopped taking it after 4 days and these symptoms went away..

Things I never felt before.  I have no idea what is going on..  :(

I take TS-II and Master Gland for www.naturessunshine.com
all natural herbs that help balance the pitulitary and thyroid gland.

I take my labs at the end of August 2011, so hopefully we will see what happens.  My Endo isnt too excited about me asking him to add on extra blood test , for some reason.

I asked him to add free t4 and my liver and pitulitary.. i also wanted to check my iodine levels bc I read alot about Iodaral and how it can help with thyroid. But if you have hashimotos and your iodine levels are normal, it can increase the attack

You said that you feel great and have little to no symptoms.  Then what is the problem you want to fix?  LOL

Really hard to even try to comment further without knowing more.  Have you ever been tested for the thyroid antibodies, TPO ab and TG ab.  These are used to diagnose for Hashimoto's.  Also, have you been tested beyond TSH, for the biologically active thyroid hormones, which are Free T3 and Free T4?  If so, please post results and reference ranges shown on the lab report so that members can assess the adequacy of your testing and treatment.
