I feel like I'm suffocating please help?

Hi, I'm 16 years old and I get the sensation that when I inhale, my windpipe will tighten up and will not be able to breathe, like my windpipe would just close, I am very stressed and worried by this and I don't know how long it's going to last. This happens usually when I'm sitting down or walking, I don't smoke or anything like that, I don't have trouble swallowing or talking. My throat has been tight for the whole month and I was scheduled for an appointment to the ENT doctor. I was just experiencing this today and I keep worrying about it should I be concerned? I also don't have asthma.

I know it sounds easy for me to tell you not to worry... trust me, it isn't, because I've been, done that...

It's possible that your thyroid is swollen a bit and that makes it feel odd, but it isn't dangerous; it's just when we get anxious (scared) about it, that the feeling becomes exaggerated and we just "know" something is choking us.  It's like when you feel like you're going to cry, you get that choked up feeling.

If your thyroid is swollen, you might also be a little hypo (under active thyroid) and that can also cause some shortness of breath.  As des said, make sure they test the TSH, Free T3 and Free T4...

You can talk to us here, whenever you want...

Is it a shortness of breath your having at times, or when you go to take a real big deep breath you can't quite do it?  Because it gives you the feeling that something is stopping you weather it be your throat closing (like someone has there hand on your neck)  or your lungs not expanding enough that it feels like your suffocating?
I know what that feels like and it's a horrible feeling,  I know this sounds weird but try yawning to get a deep breath, it would help me. There were times I would get tears trying desperately to take a deep breath.  I hope this helps a little until your appointment comes around.  Good luck, I hope they figure out what's going on with you.

Hi, thanks for your answer. It's like when you inhale and your winpipe constricts........... and yeah it's like someone has their hands on your neck. I don't notice it that kften but when I do, I go into panic.

How long is it until your appointment?  It sounds like you're having anxiety attacks, right now.  Be sure not to rub or palpate your neck, as that can irritate the thyroid area and make things worse.  Try not to worry...

My appointment will probably be about 2-3 weeks from now. And yeah, I'll try not to worry.

Thyroid issues can bring this both hyperthyroid and hypothyroid. Get checked for these TSH, Free T3 and Free T4.
