It may be time to shop for a new doctor then. He may take good care of your allergies, but he doesn't know much about thyroid if he thinks 17% of range for FT4 is adequate and he doesn't test FT3.
Don't let this guy keep you sick...
Went to the follow up and dr said all my readings were normal and we need to figure out what else is causing the symptoms.
Thanks for all the input everyone. I was starting to think it was all in my head bc the numbers appear to be in the "normal" range. But seriously I'm only 33, I shouldn't be having some of these issues yet.
Everything I have read over the years says the most important thing any doctor can go by is - How do you feel?. A great site (and book, which is worth picking up or seeing if it is in the library, is -Stop the Thyroid Madness. There is a website of same name which is definitely worth your visiting. That site will also advise you how to find the right doctor. I have found GP's and Family docs, etc to be pretty useless. Your gynecologist is not likely to be much help at all. This is going to be a lot of work. I have been at it for almost 40 years and it never ceases to be a challenge. Good luck.
I agree...go in there prepared to have to advocate for yourself. Maybe your doctor is one of the enlightened ones, although considering the tests he ordered, I doubt it.
print this page and make him read it.. tell him healthy people have much higher ft4 and ft3.. You should read it first so you can get a quick understanding of your numbers and how they fall out of range.. highlight the important parts so it stands out when u show him

demand treatment..
Just the follow up to review the results from the blood work.
TPOab and TGab are both negative, so it doesn't look like you have Hashi's. That's the good news, but unfortunately, it's not going to help you get treatment.
Your doctor will most likely blow off your low FT4 because TSH is in range. I think your best arguing point for getting treatment is your goiter. You don't have a goiter if your thyroid isn't under stress. If your current doctor won't treat based on that, I'd ask for a referral. An endocrinologist is the specialist you should see for your thyroid. However, you don't have to see an endo; any doctor with an interest can treat thyroid. And, all endos are not necessarily good thyroid doctors. Some only want to treat diabetes.
What's going to happen in two weeks?
He said if there was anything major he would call. If I don't here from him I go back in 2 weeks.
yea.. they do the same with my mom.. so arrogant and misinformed.. terrible combination
I have an appt with a GYNO later this month so maybe if my GP doesn't take action I can get them to looking to it since it's hormone related. I've felt like this for years. I did try one other time to get a Dr to looking in to it and he did the blood work and never called. I called his office and a nurse told me my levels were fine and that was that.
You definitely are hypo..
your FT4 should be around 1.1 maybe 1.06 or so based on ref ranges.. i base this on adding the low and high and divide by 2.. some look at upper 1/3 of the high.. it's not an exact science.. but u are definitely low.
they didn't run free t3 which is absolutely insane.. but common. my mom's doc is the same way.. i have to scream at her to get him to run it.. and when she asks he blows her off.. pisses me off to no end. So i'm ordering her labs myself thru lef.org.
t3 is your juice.. and without knowing that number the docs are literally useless in their assessment of your thyroid condition. You have to get retested. Pain i know.
Your TSH is high based on your ref range.. should be about .6 to 1.
Getting them to do anything about it might take an act of congress or finding a new doc.. or looking for an Otc thyroid supp.. with some thyroid hormone in it.
Even a slight dip in thyroid can cause all sorts of problems.. i know personally.. So dont stop seeking treatment. At all costs..
THYROID ANTIBODIES RESULTS
Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) Ab 10 IU/ml 0-34
Thyroglobulin, Antibody 0.9 IU/ml 0.0-0.9
Please note: low positive Thyroglobulin antibodies are seen in a portion of the asymptomatic populations.
I should have the antibody results back today. Maybe they will have some answers. This is my first experience with any of this so I really can't say how this dr will proceed. I know he takes good care of my allergies, haha.
My first comment is that the only tests your doctor ordered that aren't considered obsolete are FT4 and TSH. The other three are typically ordered by doctors who don't have a very good grasp of thyroid issues and/or haven't kept up on improvements in testing.
Your FT4 is at 17% of range, which is way too low. Many of us found FT4 had to be around 50% of range before symptoms were relieved.
Unfortunately, TSH is within range, and many doctors put way too much weight on TSH. Unless your doctor is enlightened about the subtleties of interpreting thyroid tests and/or treats clinically to relieve symptoms, you could have a hard time getting treatment.
A swollen thyroid (goiter) indicates that your thyroid is under stress. An ultrasound would also be in order.
He did say that one side of my thyroid was swollen. If that matters. He said he wasn't sure if it was swelling inward.
That is a great question! But I have no idea. I would suggest arming yourself with as much knowledge as possible prior to your appt. and then you may need to see an endocronoligist, to explore in better detail, and get further testing. Good Luck!
If my panel is normal will they even consider it a thyroid issue?
The antibody test will probably give you better info. Unfortunately, be patient, cause even when the doc puts you on something, it may take some time to help. This thyroid stuff is a lot of waiting... :( good luck!
Yes it is the first thyroid panel. I am also waiting on the antibody results.
I have ALL the symptoms. I am tired all the time, so hard to wake up because I feel exhausted even after a full nights sleep. Hair falls out, dry skin, weight gain, hoarse voice, memory issues etc.
Is this your first thyroid panel you've ever had done? Everything looks normal from a numbers perspective. My doctor likes my TSH closer to 1, but from what I know, it looks fairly normal. What symptoms are you having?
