I agree with gimel that a multi, probably, won't supply adequate amounts of the vitamins/minerals for specific needs.

I have Pernicious Anemia, which is another autoimmune disorder in which one doesn't absorb vitamin B-12 via the gut, so I take a weekly B-12 injection.  As gimel noted, I have to keep my level near the top of the range in order to keep symptoms at bay.  The range my lab uses is 200-1100, but, pllease note that any vitamin B-12 level below 500 can cause symptoms of deficiency, no matter what the lab range.

I also have osteopenia, so I take 1000-1200 mg calcium.  Because calcium needs other vitamins and minerals to be absorbed properly, I also take 2000 IU vitamin D3, 100 mcg vitamin K2 and 400 mg magnesium.

In addition, I take 200 mcg selenium daily to help with the conversion of FT4 to FT3, as well as a zinc/copper combo.

It's a good idea to talk to your doctor about any conditions you may have and what vitamins/minerals may be best to help treat them.

Multivitamin tablets are good, but typically won't provide adequate amounts for some specific needs.  Vitamin D needs to be about 55-60, b12 in the upper end of its range, and ferritin about 70 minimum.  If not tested for those, it would be a good idea to do so and supplement as needed.

Dear gimel & barb,

That makes me feel much better. I have a question on the supplements.

I take multivitamin tablets. It has vitamin + minerals + trace elements.
I assume this is just okay to aid T4 to T3 conversion and no additional supplement is needed.

My experience is very similar to Barb.  I have been on Armour Thyroid, and now Armour Thyroid and Cytomel both, starting almost 7 years ago.  I feel better than I can even remember from my approx 30 years on T4 med, up to a max dosage of 200 mcg.  I also have taken supplements to get my Vitamin D, B12 and ferritin to optimal levels.

What is your definition of "long term"?  We don't have very many members who stay on the forum long term...

I, personally, have been on either cytomel or its generic counterpart, liothyronine, for the past 7 years and have had only good results.
