Just Got Home / Total Thyroidectomy

Well, I just got home from the hospital today...I had a total thyroidectomy.  Overall it went well.  I call talk, swallow and the surgeon said he was able to leave all of my parathyroids.  The incision is small and below the neck line.  Now I just have to wait for the pathology reports......I just want good news!

Now I have some questions:

1.)  How long does it take to recovery from this surgery?
2.)  How long before I go hypo?

Thanks

I just got a phone call from my doctors office.....I DO NOT have cancer!  I am hypo and need to get my meds worked out, but I will take it! :-)  Thanks to everyone who gave my kind words, support and prayers!  I wish all of you the best as well.

I will be sticking around here, as I need to learn the ins and outs of blood tests and medications.  I also have a 6 year old son who has Graves, so I am still very interested in learning as much as I can.

Have  great day! :-)

Hi Tamra,

I live in Chicago, but I would recommend my surgeon to anyone who is willing to travel, or who lives in the area.  I am shocked, I could go to work tomorrow if I had too.....But I want to wait for the Path reports first.  This was such a painless procedure I can't believe it!  My surgeon has the hands of an angle.

Good Luck Tamra, I will be praying for you too.  Keep me updated!

Take Care,
Karl (BMXDAD)

Wow! I'm so glad your surgery went well. If you live in Texas, please send me the name of your surgeon. I'm going to get an ultrasound next week to see if my four nodules are behaving.

I can't believe you only have a tiny scar!

I am sure your biopsy and everything will be fine.

Thanks so much for sharing the great news!

:) Tamra

Very happy that everything went well.  Recovery is individual but most people seem to get back to "normal" w/in a few weeks.   It took 3 weeks for me to be able to go back to work but I had complications.   As far as going hypo, that all depends on whether they find cancer or not.   If not then you should be started on meds right away.   Then it's just a matter of trial and error before you find the dosage that works for you.   I'm just over 4 months post op and am almost there.   Once I recovered from the surgery itself it's been a fairly easy ride.    Just remember to communicate how you feel to your doctor and make sure that he/she responds to that.  Good luck.

Glad all went well. Prayers for the pathology report...

The thyroid surgery for me did not hinder me in any way. I would have only been out of work on 1 week, but I had other health issues due to two thyroid storms prior to surgery. I ended up in hospital for two weeks after surgery,(despite RAI) but like I said, it was not due to the thyroid surgery. I had a lot of issues from graves disease/hyper/goiter. Let's just say my organs went haywire for a bit. My neck was sore for about 2 days and could not turn my head much, hence, the no driving yet.

I started on medication two days after surgery, but others right after and other longer. It will depend on your lab work, make sure you get your labs done. Be prepared for patience in getting your dosage correct. It took me a year. I had the ups & downs emotionally due to the levels. But levels all good now.

Again, glad all went well.

Well, first of all thanks for all of the kind words and blessings!

I had my TT because of a Cold Hurthle cell nodule that was discovered.  My FNA showed it to be non-malignant, however, my doctors (General, endo & surgeon) all agreed that since I have hashi's and the FNA showed Hurthle cells that I should get the whole thing removed to be safe and since my thyroid is useless with hashi's it was the best choice.

As for my progress....My surgeon is the best!  I have little to no discomfort at all.  I can talk, my parathyroid glands are still in tact, my incision is small and below the neck line and I'm home one day after the proceedure.

I just hope that my final pathology come back with good news too!  God Bless!

Thanks Again To Everyone For Thier Support & Kind Words!

God Bless All!
