Mild condition, severe symptoms?

by Mark Lupo, M.D., Mar 27, 2010 08:15AM
There is not a TSH that is diagnostic of myxedema.  Classically the TSH is very high (>30-50 or even in the 100's), but the clinical picture is more important, as **some patients are more sensitive to relatively small changes in thyroid status.**

I wondered about something related to the above comments.  Can someone with mild hypothyroid have symptoms of severe hypothyroidism, particularly psychiatric?  Anyone, even rare cases?  Is there any documentation out there on it?  Can Hashimoto mask severe hypothyroid numbers, or can someone with Hashimoto look mild but have severe symptoms?

Thank you.

Yes, when my levels get a hair out of whack, I feel like am way out of whack. I had an Endocrinologist once tell me that certain individuals can be more sensitive than others when it comes to their Thyroid disorders. I sometimes have to beg for dosage change even when labs are showing at lower or upper of the "ranges".

Different Docs have different ways of treating as well.

Well, I'm just wondering because I have some symptoms that could be from something else, but if they were from thyroid, it would be severe.  My doctor thinks it's something else, but I'm just learning now there could be a connection, so I'm searching it out.  Yet, my blood levels are mild hypothyroid.

Here's my labwork:

Hi,

I'd want to see the FT3 and FT4 levels.  TSH alone is not enough to tell complete picture.

I'd think that low FT3 and FT4 wouild more accurately show the problem, though of course a high TSH is also indicative.
