Yes, this is what endocrinologist do best they ruin your health and leave you the patient holding this big bag of poop and no real way to fix you other then to blame you for lack of exercise and poor eating habits ....all while they know they did this.
I'm bitter from my own personal battle to prove I wasn't eating donuts in the dark after my thyroidectomy as I watched my personal horror show play out over the past 3yrs with increasing weight and one health problem after another and no Endo or GP to help stop this madness.
Sorry I have no real advice just understand your flustration.
Increase your t4( Levoxyl /synthroid) add a t3 -cytomel pr liothyronine. Ideal TSH is 1.00 or less. Trust me you may have to switch doctors! I promise this will work
i 've been (and still am )in the same boat as you...
i started off with hypo back in 2004-2005 when i first tested. I had a very erratic lifestyle back then and wasnt regular with my meds. i used to remember a week later that i hadnt taken my meds and used to pop 6-7 at one go! this continued for a while-(2-3 years atleast) and i had lost a great deal of weight(came down to 48kgs from approx 64kgs!) i used to feel absolutely fine- i partied, drank, smoked , travelled, worked non stop.(the insomnia is absolutely correct- during this thin period i have stayed awake for 48 hours at a stretch.)
suddenly in 2007-2008 i started piling on the pounds again..i felt i used to put on weight just by breathing:(( i tried cardio, hired a personal trainer, kick boxing, muay thai, regulated my diet, minussed sugar completely etc. nothing has worked.
since then ive been yo-yoing between hypo and hyper. i also have tachycardia... considering my family health history(dad and mum died of heart and lung ailments, grandma died of cancer) i should be super aware.
ps- just got back from the doc- im officially hyper- not that im losing any weight. but i havent put on any as well.meeting an endocrinologist tomorrow.
good luck with your endeavours!
Take your medication. Hyperactive thyroid is very dangerous not only can you screw up your metabalism, harmones, stomach but you can severly damage your heart. As we get older it is harder to get the weight off. Not taking your medication will only make you more hypo and hence gain more weight. Your thyroid is nothing to mess with. Go to a metabalic ENT who can guide you in the right direction. You may also want to see if you have another medical condition like addrenial fatigue or poly-cytstic ovary syndrome.
Please take your meds as directed (maybe you need a higher dose or something). Just don't go HyperT. I am hyperT and have lost a great deal of weight (I have never been overweight, yet I dropped 30 pounds in 3 months), and I'm very weak. I've lost muscle mass and I feel malnourished. I also have permanent tachycardia (rapid heart rate) and palpitations even though I had thyroid surgery, and my endo says I may have to take heart medication for the rest of my life BECAUSE of the damage caused by hyperthyroidism. This can definitely mess with your body and do PERMANENT damage. Please do not do that to your body. Ask your endo to adjust your meds so that you're not quite so hypo, but please, please do not let yourself go hyper.
Take your medication please....being hyper is not all its cracked up to be. It totally screws up your entire hormones. I had TT back in '94, I have struggled with the being over medicated part about a year ago, and now again (possibly). It is NOT fun.
I have been told I am being over medicated (waiting on blood results). Right now I feel like ****. Yes you lose the weight, but the body aches, insomnia and other elments (won't go into the long story).
When people tell me they wish they had my problem, i always tell them be careful what you wish for......
Take your medication, don't screw up your hormones anymore than they already are.....
Find out what your thyroid blood tests show.
As AR said, you may not be at an optimal TSH. You should have a TSH between 0.5 and 2.0 while on meds.
Take the meds as everyone has said.
I have graves which is hyperthyroid and i did not lose weight i gained. and gained. will be awhile before i feel better and will probably gain more I am miserable, this summer has been awful being hyper. wouldn't want this again. You may not remember how tired and hot and miserable you were, the mind seems to do that. and who is to say this time you would lose weight, you could gain, and at the same time being doing damage to your body by not taking pills.
I agree keep taking your pills and try to adjust the dose so you are not so hypo.
good luck, GW
I am in exactly the same position of you and I still am fighting the weight.
I've learned so much from you!!! See????? :-)
I was recently diagnosed as HYPER. The very LAST thing on my mind is the possibility of gaining weight if this can be corrected. You say you would rather be HYPER? Well, being diagnosed as HYPER has literally ruined my summer. Although I have no symptoms, I'm scared out of my mind as to what can happen to my body in the HYPER state. Do your self a favor and take your pills, and take care of yourself!
Start taking your pills again.
Stopping them will make you more hypo, and you will feel worse.
What you may need, depending on your hormone levels, is a little stronger dose of medication. You may be stuck in a slightly hypo state all the time even though your bloodwork is "within normal ranges".
Some people do feel better just slightly hyper, but if you get too hyper you can suffer damage to your body.
Stopping your pills will make you sick and do the opposite of what you would like to acomplish.
