NO PROJECTION

I had my thyroid removed. It has been 2 years.  I have lost 53% of my projection, front neck is numb, and hard to swallow at times.  I had a goiter with nodules. Had no biopsy done only ultra sound. No cancer. Was it necessary to take my thryoid? Now I am questioning why doctor never mentioned any other remedies. How do I handle all this now?

I did have exercises and did them.  To no avail.  I also have a penny whistle.  Funny though, how I was told "oh don't worry about your vocals it is rare anything of permanent damage will happen.  Go figure.

I went to my endocrinologist the other day and she will be sending me a doc in nyc who
does nothing but vocal cords. She said let him see if anything can be done. My right cord is paralysised.
Didn't the voice therapist give you things to do ,exercises for the cords?
I have thought of getting a whistle to put on my key chain,that should get my kids attention.
Either that or a megaphone!

I had nodules 2.5 cm in size.  three of them.  And a goiter. I had no biopsy done...it was just decided it would be better for them to come out. No Cancer.   I have had them look in my throat at my vocal chords with a mirror and they are claiming they can see vibration. BUT, I cannot sing (not professional), nor can I yell. My little one was running towards the road too quickly I went to yell his name and Nothing came out!  I have no strength to yell like that.  My doctor put me through to a voice therapist who has tested my vocals and said I have lost 53% of my projection.  Now I am having to live with it.  Guess I will never really know.  Thank you all though, for your support and responses.

Hi faith,
What do you mean by projection? Sounds like you had some nerve damage. Do you ever just cough or feel like you are choking for no reason at all???
Have you been scoped to see if both cords move correctly????
You can't rack your brain over what If! It;s over. Sometimes nodular thyroids appear funky
the pathologist does a frozen section but the surgeon is basing what the path says and their experience too to determine  how to proceed. It's hard too for those who have to come back in for a total because the frozen was clean no signs of cancer and the final path report indicates cancer or pre ancer cells.It can be a gray area. Whats done is done. try to focus on the future and feeling better.

It is hard to say if necessary or not! Were you have problems with the nodules that were bothering you? One thing I have found out is..in a lot of cases they can not give you a firm "CANCER" or NON-Cancerous" until they remove the thyroid and do that Frozen biopsy thing.  BUT.... the standard process is...Physical exam > Ultrasound > the FNA (biopsy). Once these 3 things are done then an informed decision should be made and mabe even get a second opinon. If your nudlues were to small to do the FNA (anything less than 1.9cm according to my doctor) then there were other treatment options that you could have done.
