One poke for lidocaine, two for samples. They got a large amount using Ultrasound guided FNA. On the ones with a lot of sticks, were they using ultrasound guided. However, I only had one nodule they were trying to get cells from, but it was a complex nodule with one component solid and one component liquid.
Results, atypical hurthle cells, suspicious
Surgery, papillary carcinoma found, luckily encased.
First FNA - 1 stick for lidocaine, 3 sticks for nodule - Undiagnostic
Second FNA - No lidocaine - 2 stikcs for nodule - Suspicious for Follicular Neoplasm
Surgery - Had right half and isthmus removed.. Nodule was 100% benign!
I had one fna- highly suspicious of papillary carcinoma, surgery revealed papillary carcinoma 2.5cm, TT May 30th 2007. I guess it was so big that they got a good sample.
First FNA- 4 sticks for lidocaine and seven sticks for nodules-4 on the right and 3 on the left. Not enough cells recovered for diagnosis.
Second FNA -2 sticks for lidocaine and 4 sticks to each nodule for a total of 10 sticks. Follicular cells and inflammatory cells.
Going to second opinon 1-22-08, first endo wants to wait and see.
First one 2 years ago: 3 sticks
Second November: 9 sticks - apparently that nodule was quite elusive -
PS Neither had Lidocaine or any other numbing agent. Reason: The Lidocaine would be more painful than sticks themselves. Spoken like a true physician; obviously, he never had someone jam a needle in HIS neck.
Final Dx: Papillary carcinoma; TT 12/18/07; Feeling GREAT. (never felt bad really)
Hugs to all
I had mine yesterday and had 2 nodules, total 21 pokes. Have the path report already ( I work in the hospital ) but don't know what it means.

4 to 5 Pokes for me.
The nurse kept asking the doctor whether more pokes would be needed..
1 FNA
Four nodules biopsied. Each nodule was poked 6 times, one for numbing and five for testing. Results revealed Hashi's in three nodules and in one nodule on one poke they found atypical cells they believe to be papilliary cancer. I'm having surgery on Feb 5th.
I had 9 pokes, one for numbing and the rest for testing. The FNA results came back with possible cancer cells, atypical follicular cells. The patholoigical results revealed a follicular adnoma, on the half that was removed, the other side had no signs of abnormalcy.
3 FNAs
First - 7 pokes, including the lidocaine (sp?). Came back non-diagnostic, but showing a few follicular and Hurtle cells.
Second - 4 pokes. Benign colloid goiter.
Third - 2 pokes. Suspicious for follicular neoplasm.
No surgery planned at this time.
