SPREADING THYROID AWARENESS

DLA
Ok, so today in church I had an idea about spreading thyroid awareness since Sept. it thyca awareness month.  What if we all agree to talk to one group about thyroid issues seriously.  It would mean sharing our stories and giving them facts about thyroid and thyca.  I know it is "thyca" awareness month, but if we can just get the message out to more people what a difference we could make!

Was thinking I could talk to my church and write a letter to the editor about it in our local papers.  We can give them personal experience, symptoms, levels, whatever we thought was important to tell them.

So what does every one say?  How many could do this?  Doesn't have to be a big group, just some people so that we make them aware.  Remember that old commercial?  And she tells 2 friends, and she tells 2 friends, and she tells 2 friends, etc.  Just imagine how many people we could get the word out to!

Am trying to come up with something to put on a t-shirt with info on it to wear all month.  Or just something to make them ask so I can talk to them about it, or get them curious enough to ask their dr.

Let me know.

I just had a "duh" moment. I neglected to mention that I work for the state health department. I will check with our chronic disease folks to see if they have anything in the works. You also might think about contacting your state or local health departments to see if they have anything going. I will still contact the news media and will provide the link to the cancer website (End Rope ~ thanks for the idea). I have found that most of them have places on their website for providing them with tips and comments.

Thanks, found it. I think JoBa has a great idea about the news segments. They usually focus briefly on one issue and so if we could agree on some consolidated  facts that are most important that would help. It is easy for people to get overwhelmed by all the facts, and then lose interest and worse yet, not learn anything to take away with them. Positive facts about early detection, and the success rate of proper care at the beginning, as well as the need to have ongoing check-ups helps people not fall thru the cracks, so to speak and have un--necessary, on-going problems. Also it seems in all our postings, we would need to briefly be honest about how far reaching the physical and emotional symptoms are, and how real they are and valid. Practical issues like child care during inpatient treatment is helpful for people to know. After all, this is a cancer that effects the entire family. Just some thoughts. Not sure how early one would have to notify them in order for it to be ready and accurate, Do you know? Thanks

that is awsome I WISH there was something or someone close to me willing to do it.  Well I will but I dont know enough about all this yet.  I do know that my pharmacist at Wal Greens had her thyroid out due to ThyCa.  I just dont know enough about levels and I keep getting told that my symptoms are NOT thyroid related so I am stilll alittle in limbo.

I think it's a great idea. Many local tv stations (and newspapers) have health segments and it's easy enough to call or e-mail them to make them aware that September is thyroid cancer awareness month so that they can publicize it. Thyroid cancer is actually increasing in frequency, possibly due to increased awareness and testing (it is frequently found as an "incidentaloma", which was what mine was.) Also, because so many people develop nodules, it is something that many people may need to deal with. Because it is quite treatable, there would be a huge benefit of educating the public.

I had to send an e-mail out to people at work to let them know what was going on and I have heard from a number of people who are on synthroid for Hashi, Graves etc or who have had or know someone who has had thyroid cancer. I was frankly amazed. A number of people who knew nothing about thyca asked me what my symptoms were (none) and how I found out about the nodule.

So, I will certainly contact my local media to alert them to this.  They may or may not do anything, but at least I will have tried. I guess it's fitting that my surgery is in September.
