Severe hair loss with Levothyroxine 50MCG

I have been on Levothyroxine 50MCG for over 4 months now for my hypothyroid. The numbers came back normal after couple of months but my hair loss has gotten from bad to worse.

When I spoke to the doc (OBGYN) office, I was asked to see a dermatologist. Didn't get to talk to my OBGYN who prescribed meds after a routine blood work during annual check up. Should I check with my doc to find out if the meds need to be changed? Need a refill in 2 days. Any info  is appreciated.

Thanks
mala

Hi Mala,

Hairloss is a symptom of both undertreated hypothyroidism as well as a side effect from Levothyroxine (or Synthroid or Levoxl- Synthetic T4 drugs). You may need to increase your meds because you are still low thyroid or you may need to switch to a different type of thyroid medication (ie Armour) or add some T3 (Cytomel) to your current medication. If your doctor says you are now in the "normal range" make sure you are in the optimum range not just "normal" because they can be 2 totally different things. Especially if you still have symptoms- our bodies are the first thing to tell us when somethings wrong so trust it not just a lab test.
