Contrary to what doctors believe and practice, TSH is affected by so many things that it is useful as an indicator of thyroid status only when it is at extreme levels. Her TSH level should have prompted further testing. Specifically she should have been tested for the possibility of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. The first test should be Thyroid Peroxidase amtibodies (TPO ab). If that is within range, then a tet for Thyroglobulin antibodies should be done. If it is Hashimoto's the TPO ab test will show it 90% of the time
In addition she should always be tested for both Free T4 and Free T3 each time she goes for tests. Free T3 is very important. In addition, it would be good to test for Vitamin D, B12 and ferritin. D should be at least 50 ng/ml, B12 in the upper part of its range, and ferritin should be at least 100.
If you can get all those done for her and then post results and reference ranges shown on the lab report, we ill be glad to help interpret and advise further.
