TSH over 200! Please help!

I am a 29 year old female. I just had a baby on 11/30/07 by c-section. Before being pregnant, I was found to have thyroid antibodies but was told that everything was still fine and that we would just keep an eye on it. Since delivering over 4 months ago, I have had extreme fatigue, hair loss, chills, dry itchy skin, SEVERE intestinal/gas issues, extreme moodiness and more. I talked to my ob/gyn about it and she ordered a TSH and T4. The results were:

TSH: 202.694
T4: 0.25

I know that the TSH is extremely high. The ob/gyn told me to let my endo know and she started me on 50 mcg of Levothroxine a day. I am worried about the dosage and about the extrememly high levels of my TSH. Could the results be a fluke? Could they really be that high?

Any help would be much appreciated. I just want to feel better!!!!

Thanks, Brooke

I had similar issues and my doctor accused me of never taking my medication. This went on for years.
Once I was diagnosed with Celiac disease and adjusted my diet accordingly, erroneous TSH values were a thing of my past.
I also had hair loss, fatigue and intestinal issues. FWIW

Hello. My name is Renata Deptuła. I live in Poland with my family. My husband Jacek (40 years)for year 2006 raised level has had TSH - over 400. First investigation showed the hypofunction of thyroid. We made investigation and he was plauge - sticken from worms for cat which are in thyroid and therefore it is such high level TSH. If you want to know as I treat him, send e-mail on: renata.***@****

Thank you so much for the replies. I will do my research and hope that the new dosage of medicine works quickly! I was not aware of the possibility of a coma but I will read about it and at least let my husband know...especially since I have a small (4 month old) son and a 7 year old daughter that I am home alone with a lot.

Thanks again and I will get you updated on how it is going. I can't to feel better. :)

I'm glad you talked to the Endo, and you are on a higher dose.

I don't want to worry you needlessly, but until your TSH drops below 100, there is a small chance you could go into myxedema coma. It probably won't happen. If you become disoriented and mentally confused, call someone.

Lots of people have been where you are and did not have that problem. Be aware of it, but don't get an ulcer worrying about it.

I was absolutely going to say that the dose of 50 was WAY too low. I just got my latest TSH levels back Monday and my TSH went from a 3 (in January 08) to 66. My endo started me on 100 mcg of levothyroxine. The only reason I caught mine before it got higher was because I was supposed to start fertility drugs next weeks. Obviously not any more. I really hope you start to feel better. This is the first time I have taken the meds too and I am waiting to feeling more energy and motivation.
I was told that if you start to feel really dizzy and lethargic to be concerned. There is a such thing as a coma that can happen because of the thyroid problem. I would also do your research to be educated on what could happen. That's what I try to do. Good luck and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers!

Thank you for your reply. I did call my Endo and he said that I needed to be on 125mcgs of Levothyroxine. Test again in 6 weeks and see him after the test. So, I am hoping that this will start to get better really soon. I have been feeling TERRIBLE!

What symptoms would I need to look for to head to the ER? I have been feeling so bad lately that I wouldn't even know.

Thanks.

It could be a fluke, but the test is probably accurate.

Your TSH will start dropping now that you are on Levothyroxine. It may be down below 100 within a week or two.

It wouldn't hurt to run a TSH again in a week just to see where you are. A larger dose of meds may be required, even if it is for a short time.

How soon do you see an Endo?
Do you have an Endo you can call and consult over the phone?
Talk to the Endo's nurse and explain what is going on?

A TSH of 200 is serious business. You need to talk to the Endo soon. If you start feeling REALLY bad, have someone take you to the ER.
