Thyroid Lobectomy

I had a right multinodular goiter 12 years ago.  After numerous biopsies and treatment
with synthroid, after 1 year I elected the right thyroid lobectomy due to inconclusive
biopsies.  When I left the hospital the surgeon put me on a low dose synthroid and told
me to take it for life.  When I had to go back to see my endrocronologist he took me off
the medication and told me to just do a TSH every 6 months.  To this day my levels
have been normal.  But at the time I had the goiter my levels were always normal also.
I was told eventually I would need medication.  I have always wondered which doctor
was correct about the synthroid because I worry about the left side getting bad also?

I had a total thyroidectomy back in december and the surgery was easy going. I have to take med's for the remainer of my life to replace the function of the thyroid, and it's quite an adjustment.

Being that you are only having partial removed, you more than likely will not have to take med's which is a great thing.

Most  partial thyroid removals require no hormone therapy due to the fact that half of the thyroid is still producing which allows the thyroid to function normally. Being that the endo is closely watching your levels, if you are doing fine without the med's then there is actually no need to take them. If the levels change at anytime, that is when you should consider the med's again.

I have a left multnodular goiter and am having surgery, I will be requesting that if there is any chance of this happening again that they completely remove it because this has been the worst year of my life. People need to know how hyperthyroidism affects peoples every day lives. Did you begin to feel better after your surgery, and what do I expect after my surgery?
