WHat should I expect & should I be concerned?

Yesterday I had a follow-up US for a nodule that was found a few months ago during an MRI of my neck.

Gotta love how the medical practice/insurance biz works - I was sent on my merry way, only to receive a call two hours later telling me that I have to have a US guided Core Biopsy.  Seems that the nodule is a complex cyst with both fluid and a solid nodule - the only one I have on my Thyroid.

The nurse that called seemed a little anxious to get the biopsy scheduled, which made me nervous.

My questions are - should I be nervous/concerned?  What should I expect during and after the procedure?  Will I feel like coming into work after?

Talked with Dr. office yesterday to set up the six month ultrasound recheck.  To my surprise (and dismay), when the nurse called back with the appointment she told me that he wanted another biopsy.  Is this unusual?  I mean, if the biopsy six months ago was clean - why do I need another?

Dr's office called with biopsy results this morning.  No malignancy, no major concern; but, I do go back for another ultrasound in six months.  So, at least at this point, I am breathing a sigh of relief.  Yippee!

The fine needle biopsy is routine when there is concern with the results of  the U/S.
It's uncomfortable but not painful and you may have soreness at the site for a few hrs or so afterward but that's it. It really depends on whose behind the needle....

A solid nodule is cause for concern because it can become cancerous, although in most cases they are not. I had total removal of my thyroid due to a multinodular goiter with one solid nodule that was 3.7cm. Although my biopsy results were benign, i was recommended to have surgery just because of the size and the abnormal cells that were in the nodule.

It's always best to get more than one opinion either way.
