What does focal photopenia mean?

I had a thyroid scan with uptake and the report shows “Focal photopenia within the lower pole right lobe as well as the upper lobe left lobe, concerning for superimposed nodules for which further characterization with thyroid ultrasound recommended.” There was markedly elevated uptake percentages most consistent with hyperthyroidism.  Does anyone know what focal photopenia means?

Photopenia indicates an area in which there's less density than other areas.  Photopenic areas sometimes show up when there's a parathyroid issue.

What else does your report say?   What you've typed indicates a need for follow up with an ultrasound.
