continual return ofa thyroglossal duct cyst

my friend has a 2 yr old boy who has had a reoccuring thyroglossal cyst. he has has 15 surgeries in last 8 mos. the cyst keeps coming, moving higher, above location of ther last incision. the cysts come back, break open, mucousy fluid. the doctors say they have never seen anything like this in 40 yrs of practice. we dont know where to turn, the mother is on medicaid, and her financial situation is  critical; she has two other children besides the one that is ill. the hospitals here have no answers but to continue cutting more out and draining the pus. do thyroglossal cysts return, is it normal to have to keep performing surgery? we need help as soon as possible, please.

Thanks so much for a response.  I am new at this and again this is a friends child that is so ill.  i just received a call this am that the mother has taken himback to the hospital again. The answer to your question is "yes"she has asked repeatedly for a second opionion but the surgeons here has advised they are the only ones n the charlotte nc area to do this surgery and again they say this childs case is for the books.  Again he has had the surgery repeatedly and another cyst returns just above the one removed.  I wish there could be an easy answer to her childs illness and do pray others like yourself will respond

Gosh, I'm sorry to hear about this reocurring. My son when he was 6 years old had one removed it was pretty huge you could see it protuding from his neck as it was about the size of a golf ball. Never had this problem again. Can they get a second opinion? I think I'd be heading to another surgeon.
