hempem is right that we need to see exactly what test that was and whatever the range, if it was TSH, which is quite likely, 8 is too high, and indicates hypothyroidism, as do your symptoms. Many doctors refuse to begin treatment until TSH reaches 10 or more.
If there were other tests done, such as T3 and T4 - hopefully, Free T3 and Free T4, please post those results and be sure to include reference ranges for those, as ranges vary lab to lab and have to come from your own report.
Hi Debbie - usually the people on here (who are very helpful - particularly someone named Gimel for me) will ask you to post your score along with the range used. For example, was it your TSH level that showed 8? And what was the range used to determine what was normal? If it was .3 to 3, which a lot of labs use, then no, 8 is most certainly NOT normal. But if we are talking about your Total T4, then the range is 4.5 - 12.5, and you would be normal. Ask for a copy of your thyroid test, because Doctors usually test TSH, Total T4, at least. Two different results. If you do have a copy of your results, list them here along with the ranges used, and you will get a LOT of helpful input! :) Another key point is that if you are having symptoms, like I was, EVEN IF the Doctor thinks you are normal, (or close to normal) you can ask to be treated until your symptoms go away instead of your lab results showing as "in the normal range." Until we see the normal range and which test you were given, it's hard to tell what 8 means.
