question --TT on Tuesday

Papillary cancer, already removed right lobe on 10/29. I am having my TT on 11/18 and I am really scared of the after effects......
I have my pre-op tomorrow, but it would help me sleep tonight if I had some answers.

Do they automatically start you on thyroid meds? If not, how long before I would know if I was going hypothyroid?
If I am going to have cancer therapy, do I have to feel really bad before it?
I have heard about a shot that you can get so you don't have to actually do the hypothyroid thing?
thanks.

As you know, I am going in for my other 1/2 tomorrow.  I did ask the same questions and my surgeon said they would start me on "something" after surgery but I would have to talk to the endo when he comes and sees me.  I wish I had more answers for you.  As soon as I do and I am able to post, I will!

Hugs~

Okay kids, I broke down and bought a medical text book that explains some of these mysterious things that doctors do to us.

They like to put us on thyroid meds after thyroid surgery because patients who are hypothyroid heal 50% slower and have 50% more complications than patients who have normal thyroid levels.   The goal is to heal you up before putting you into hypohell for your RAI.

That's why some patients will only receive a week or two of thyroid hormone (usually T3) before being taken off all of it for RAI.

Wow - that was a big "duh" for me.

My best to both of you!!!

Yeah, it is a bit mean but, as my mother used to say "it's for your own good."   Although this, hopefully, won't entail a major spanking after those words.  :-)

You'll get through this.  It won't be fun but you'll have a whole bunch of cyber-buddies dragging you through it by the thyroid scar.

Hugs and heal quickly!!
